ITM Power Says Clean Energy Pilot Project Now Fully Operational

Thu, 02nd Jan 2020 12:24

(Alliance News) - ITM Power PLC said Thursday that HyDeploy, the "first live pilot project" to inject zero carbon hydrogen into a gas network to heat homes and businesses, is now fully operational.

ITM Power shares were up 8.3% in London at 77.02 pence each on Thursday afternoon.

HyDeploy is a GBP6.8 million project funded by UK energy regulator Ofgem and its ultimate goal is to "establish the potential for blending up to 20% hydrogen into the normal gas supply" in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The pilot trial is underway at Staffordshire, in England's West Midlands, injecting up to 20% of hydrogen into University's existing natural gas network, feeding 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings, the company said.

"If a 20% hydrogen blend was rolled out across the country it could save around 6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, the equivalent of taking 2.5 million cars off the road," the company said.

ITM Power Chief Executive Officer Graham Cooley said: "I am delighted that this important pilot project is now operational.

"Indeed, the committee for climate change has indicated that the UK will need between 6 gigawatts and 17gigawatts of electrolysis in the next 30 years to store renewable power and provide renewable heat. Today's announcement is a very significant step."
