FTSE 250 movers: Centamin slumps; retailers on the rise

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 250 was down 0.4% at 17,862.79 in afternoon trade on Wednesday.
Centamin was weaker after it said gold production and sales fell in the third quarter, and cut its production guidance for 2021.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said: "You would have thought that sitting on a gold mine would be a path to instant riches, especially when the precious metal's price is trading near its all-time high, so shareholders can be forgiven for being frustrated by the latest profit warning from Centamin.

"Production difficulties at the Sukari mine in Egypt - and management's completely appropriate decision to put staff and investment in their safety first - mean that production will undershoot and production costs exceed expectations in 2020 and now 2021 as well."

Travel company TUI and pub chain Mitchells & Butlers also retreated as investors continued to fret about the impact of Covid-19 restrictions.

Going the other way, retailers were on the rise, with online electricals retailer AO World pacing the advance, while Dixons Carphone, Marks & Spencer and Dunelm also gained.

Liberum had a note out in which it said: "An analysis of the changes on our lists shows that online retail stocks and retailers that can continue to grow even during a second wave are emerging as the new market favourites."

Elsewhere, Royal Mail was trading higher after launching a 72p parcel pick-up service.
