Babcock wins GBP492 million contract with Australian Defence Force

Fri, 21st Oct 2022 09:42

(Alliance News) - Babcock International Group PLC on Friday said Babcock Australia has won a ten-year contract with the Australian Defence Force, worth around GBP492 million.

The London-based aerospace and defence firm said it will upgrade the Australian Defence Force's Defence High Frequency Communications System.

Under the agreement, Babcock will support the customer's existing high frequency capability, while delivering a comprehensive technology upgrade programme. The company noted that the new system will provide Australian and allied armed forces with the ability to securely communicate using voice and other data from almost any location.

The contract, which is worth around GBP492 million over 10 years, will see Australia join New Zealand and the UK in selecting Babcock as its partner in the engineering, operation and support of long range, resilient strategic HF communications.

"Babcock is now the largest provider of strategic HF communications in the world, built on a common mission system architecture that is both scalable and interoperable," the company said.

The programme is due to start in October 2023.

Chief Executive David Lockwood said: "In a modern threat environment, access to local communication infrastructure or satellite communication cannot be assured. Having a communications capability that can work seamlessly with the Australian Defence Force and its allies is essential."

Shares in Babcock were down 0.9% to 275.40 pence each in London on Friday morning.
