Ahead of G7 summit, Macron presses US to help reform taxes on big tech

PARIS, Aug 21 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macronsaid on Wednesday U.S. tech giants paid unfairly low taxes,failing to contribute to the common good, and urged Washingtonto help reform the global corporate tax code.

"The big digital players are not contributing to the commongood," Macron told reporters days ahead of a G7 summit inFrance. "I don't agree with this system, I don't think it's agood one, including for American workers."

Internet giants such as Facebook, Alphabet's Googleand Amazon are currently able to book profitsin low-tax countries like Ireland and Luxembourg, no matterwhere the revenue originates.

Macron says taxing big tech more heavily is a matter ofsocial justice and is pressing for a universal tax code fordigital services.

France's parliament in July approved a 3% levy on therevenue from digital services earned in France by firms withmore than 25 million euros ($27.75 million) in French revenueand 750 million euros worldwide.($1 = 0.9009 euros)(Reporting by Michel Rose and Marine Pennetier;Editing by Richard Lough)
