The VERY sad thing is, and one has to acknowledge that I am now an old fart, that the minority groups, and there are LOTS of them, seem to get away with shouting their causes and making the majorities feel guilty about being "normal". It was good in my day where you could be whoever you were, without feeling pressured into agreeing with something you did NOT actually agree with!!!!!
What exists is an unbalance and sure most would agree if on here fortunate. No doubt within a mile or two of where you are nice and warm fed watered their will be less fortunate so for me rather than look at what you haven't got look at what you do! Glh
Amazing statement and of its time. Not sure the 'common people' will become more docile in 2020's. Thank god we live in more enlightened times....at least I think we do!!
“Capital must protect itself in every possible way, both by combination and legislation. Debts must be collected, mortgages foreclosed as rapidly as possible.
“When, through process of law, the common people lose their homes, they will become more docile and more easily governed through the strong arm of the government applied by a central power of wealth under leading financiers.
“These truths are well known among our principal men, who are now engaged in forming an imperialism to govern the world. By dividing the voter through the political party system, we can get them to expend their energies in fighting for questions of no importance.
“It is thus, by discrete action, we can secure for ourselves that which has been so well planned and so successfully accomplished.”
Montagu Norman, Governor of The Bank Of England, addressing the United States Bankers’ Association, NYC 1924
Sadly life has always been unfair. Some are born with mental and physical bonuses others are born less well blessed. We accept this but not that some are born with more money. The fact that some of the richest in our society were born in poverty and that the majority of millionaires are self made is ignored by dogma. So how could we make everyone the same financially. Ban inherited wealth. Then pay us all the same say £300 pw. But if one person saves 50% of their money and the other spends it all after just 4 weeks you have major inequality. Of course you could make everyone spend the same, ban savings or pay everyone a pittance so that they could not save! The reality I that you simply can’t stop financial inequality.
Not quite as long but me too, Spidey.
That nice Mr. Blair (and his deputy, I guess) allowed me to play a rich man's game by a rich man's rules.
That's my idea of a Labour party.
I'm more interested to see how all those Swampy terrorists, who've been trying to impose their minority views on the country's majority, vote.
Right now the Greens have one MP and around 45,000 members.
If that doesn't increase after all their idiotic nonsense and soundbites this time around I might just actually wet myself laughing.
Shame for the planet, but LOL for Extortion Rebellion and Greta's tragically stolen childhood.
:)
Totally agree doughty9. Corbyn and his extreme advisers and policies would be a disaster for wealth creation IMO. Yes we need to come up with some answers to address the inequalities in our society. Equally, I am not impressed with the constant flow of Old Etonians, Harrovians , Rugbeians etc. and then Oxbridge running the country, government positions often gained by wealth privilege in the first place. I am the only one that finds it difficult to believe the likes of Rees Mogg is/was Leader of the House in the 21st Century. Yes we need intelligent people running this country but at times to me it doesn't seem as if we have moved out of the early 1900's. I find it difficult to accept the argument that 'that's the way it is'. After the Brexit fiasco I think we need to have a rethink about how our country is governed. A debate in Parliament although entertaining at times is embarrassing compare to the European Parliament debates and discussions. My European friends find the way we debate so antiquated and hilarious at times! Sorry to bore you with my views but nothing seems to be happening one the share front! Yet!!
I agree also,50 years I’ve voted Labour but never will I vote for these London Cabal Controlled Idiots ??
I couldn't agree more Cardinal. Will have a read.
I'm inclined to agree Kempey.
I am concerned about the great inequality in the UK but the ultra left inertia behind Corbyn isn't concerned about increasing or maintaining the wealth to address this problem. It is focused more on the politics of envy of taking from those who have wealth. For the more naive among them there seems to be this magic assumption that a greater proportion of an assumed constant wealth pot can be diverted to the needy. Unfortunately the constant wealth pot doesn't happen in practice. The wealth pot diminishes when it is attacked by their policies, and this happens time and time again in history. The golden goose stops laying its golden eggs and we are forced to share a greater proportion of diminishing pot of gold, and the whole country is poorer and suffers. We need to find better ways of appealing to individual consciences to address the problem of inequality, to find more imaginative ways of making our society more equitable, instead of resorting to a state grab which might inadvertently divert support to a privileged political class.
Hi guys this is an interesting topic. I advise anyone thing about how unequal we are to look at a report called Elitest Britain by the Sutton Trust which came out earlier this year. It isn't a left wing rag but a proper study. I noticed it because I was looking at cricket information and it popped into my purview for some reason. However, as an example, 43% of England cricket internationals went to Independent schools, yet only 7% of kids go to such schools. It's worth a look. I feel as a society it is in everyone's interest to make sure everyone gets a fair crack of the whip.

Agree with your post about Corbyn not getting elected but don't agree with the simplicity of 'this is how capitalism works' We don't live in a personal bubble, we live in a society which needs doctors, teachers, nurses et al. I have 4 sons, two in the city who earn a lot of money and one a teacher and a doctor. Can you honestly tell me that the 2 in the city are worth 12X more (before annual bonuses) than the doctor or teacher who I know work equally hard and in my opinion offer far more to society. I understand the argument that the profits in the city and taxes pay towards their salaries but all are needed by society. Its very easy to sit in your bubble and pay for your kids education, pay for your health care and complain about lack of police or roads not being repaired etc. I don't vote labour but still recognise the inequality and widening gap in those that have and those that don't and I speak as one of the former. I think we ignore that inequality at our peril!!
Corbyns tax plans before the last election would have cost every tax payer an extra £6500/yr in tax. If u can afford to give a Labour govt another £6500/yr then go on vote for them and help them bankrupt the country (like last time). They're 'promising' more this time because they are desperate, so it will cost taxpayers even more.
Why even discussed such a muted point as Corbyn? Labour will not be elected and all these rubbish being spouted in the manifesto just end up in the bin (Just where is belongs) As for financial equality this is how capitalism works so give it a rest.
Those that work hard, remain good citizens, respect the law and put into the system do okay, and the others bleat on about how unfair society is on them.

I doubt Corbyn is interested in the impact of taxes on the likes of BP or Shell on pension schemes. Any taxes will impact on them but the average bod won't see he or she is affected directly. Gordon Brown started the slide in defined benefit schemes when he took away ACT. Not many outside the City noticed but it did mean the cost of defined benefit schemes became too much and companies moved the risk to the scheme members by switching them all to contribution schemes. So in a nutshell they have "form". I am with Kempey on the overarching issues, and for what it is worth I am a Lib Dem.
vernony, they may as well all live in spain because they are not taxed in uk.
I couldn't vote for Corbyn although I acknowledge there is great inequality in this country financially. My concern is the ultra left wing ideology that lies behind his thinking...very old fashioned Marxist views on how society should be organised. He does come across as very sincere as you say but he is just a mouth piece for Momentum who I believe could be even more extreme if labour gets into power. Being anti capitalist with a big A to me is negativity to business and the bottom line is business drives the economy. Having said that I don't believe all the entrepreneurs are going to go and live in Spain or Nassau. Some who only need a laptop to work may but most businesses are not like that. I take your point though and apart from tax his plans for spending could bankrupt this country. Money has to come from somewhere!!
Yep.
And the less well off all have their pensions mostly invested in BP and Shell.
Taxing them will reduce the profits paying dividends that fund worker's pensions.
Which would have to have some kind of influence on his "No more after 66" promise.
Still, at least he believes it.
:)
Seeing some of the chatter earlier. Problem with Corbyn is that he is a sincere sounding person. But, regrettably for him and the country you need entrepeneurs to tax to pay for what he wants, and if the entrepreneurs are now all gone to live live in Spain or Nassau he is going to run out of people to tax. Except the already taxed lower paid. As for another referendum, you can only have one referendum. anything more opens the door to asking for a third referendum , and a fourth and so on . And those claims will come about if he tries to inflict another
