maybe that one particular deal might be good value, you'd have to put a gun to my head to eat a tesco sandwich so i wouldnt know if that was good value but other things arent for example i saw doritoes massively overpriced without a card and then brought back in line with a clubcard. I could sell you a £10 note and say its £50 without a clubcard or a £10er with one it doesnt mean youre saving £40. The fact is people are shopping elsewhere, the customer isnt seeing value in the clubcard so are spending money elsewhere hence the share price! If they did away with the clubcard I would use tesco more and I know many others that feel the same, people dont want to sign up to something to not get ripped off on their shopping bill when they can go elsewhere. The shareprice doesnt lie
Also fuel excluded from trading updates as it would cause wild fluctuations in LFL numbers and cause a lack of clarity on true trading position.
I presume going off reports today it's market speak for taking a hit on margin for 1H trying to keep prices down and funding promotions.
Historically fuel has had very little value to tsco re profit but cannot speak for this time out. I can't see how they could hammer tsco with a tax on profits from this yet not lay a glove on the oil majors for making the kind of profits that makes tsco look like small beer in comparison.
Can anybody give a clearer explanation on the Impairment charge, the results are very vague on the details of this.
Also I see that they are trying to keep the huge Fuel benefit under the radar....... risk of a possible flash tax here.

Dave, fetch a calculator and we'll go through the prices as you appear to have trouble with basic mathematics. A meal deal sandwich costs £2 - £3, a drink costs £1 - £2, a snack costs £1 - £2 so you're getting upto £7 worth of stuff for £3.50 (without a clubcard) and £3 (with a clubcard). A regular costa coffee costs £3.20 in Costa, but in Tesco you can have the same sized Costa coffee from the in-store Costa machines as part of the sandwich meal deal. So if you have a clubcard, you get a Costa, sandwich and a snack all for £3 (20p less than the coffee alone costs in costa coffee shops). Whichever way you try and spin it, their sandwich deals are bloody great value.
You can add the price of Tesco's basic white toastie bread and the wholemeal variety. Shot up from 65 to 75p, now 90p per loaf - all in the last 2/3 months.
its not saving you money, it shouldnt be £3.50 in the first place. Its a £3 deal being sold for £3. its like a black friday deal. I get that they lower the price for things with a clubcard but a lot of shoppers think well I will just not go to tesco and get my shopping for a fair price elsewhere without being forced to sign up for a clubcard
Dave, clubcard is very popular, most of their customers have one, and yes, it does save them a lot of money - most of Tescos offers are linked to clubcard - example, £3.50 for sandwich meal deal without clubcard, and £3.00 with a clubcard.
Lidl has apologised to its customers after claims a branch's shelves have been "empty for months" amid a lack of deliveries. One angry customer even said staff told him the new Truro branch was getting priority.

Lidl faced with shopper fury
"Have stopped going to Lidl completely now"
"It would be so nice to have more usual food in store. Went to a Southampton store yesterday. Hardly any fruit and veg and one long aisle which had sections with one or two bags of potatoes in each one. Love Lidl but getting fed up with it having so Lidll in on the shelves."

i disagree regarding the clubcard. I dont see it as knocking money off the bill but I see not having one as adding money onto the bill so it forces me to shop elsewhere. As a consumer who just wants the best value, i dont want to be forced into signing up to a clubcard and i know a lot of others who feel the same way and dont shop at tesco because of that reson
This is from the 13th of September, below. As Lidl's market share is growing even faster than Aldi's, its unlikely that Aldi is stealing market share from Lidl.
Both of them are gaining of Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury etc.
What is Lidl market share in the UK?
Aldi's sales rose by 18.7% over the 12 weeks to 4 September 2022, reaching a 9.3% market share and making it Britain's fourth largest supermarket for the first time. Meanwhile Lidl grew sales by 20.9% and its market share has increased to 7.1%.
You don't like their products. Fine, don't buy them.
Aldi might be gaining, but it's primarily because Lidl are losing customers to them because they can't get their act together. Lidl is notorious for terrible product availability, Google it, there are complaints about it nationwide.
Wether you like it or not, aldi and lidl have been going from strength to strength and keep gaining market share.
Not surprised they increased the dividend - it was that or suffer a really bad drop in the share price. But just look at the demolition of the earnings per share. Now just 3.44p compared to 10.7p a year ago. That suggests a dividend cut is forthcoming. In other words, make the most of the current one, it will be lower in the future.
These were poor results, but I'm not surprised. Our local branch often seems to be out of the most mundane stuff. For example, multipacks of crisps? Rotisserie cooked chickens? Cat litter????
I'm sorry, but if things are being run that badly, profits must drop. And their prices are nothing special either. They should be using their clout to ensure their prices are the lowest but I'd say their pricing is getting closer to Sainsbury's than Aldi's. Just look at the price of toilet paper or washing powder. They are fast losing their name for cheap shopping, and these results indicate the pattern of travel investors will have to look forward to.
My local Tesco Garage as a simple example, is priced higher than petrol stations on the nearby Arterial Road. Hopeless.
I'm surprised at the mild reaction so far to these very weak results. Personally, I would have thought the price was going to drop a bit more than this.
My experience in their stores isn't great. Lidl in particular is a sh*thole in my opinion. Row after row of empty shelves, many of the basics seemingly permanently out of stock, several isles full of weird nasty cr@p nobody wants - an example I saw recently in my local Lidl being a "urine detector", i mean wtf? Lidl has a special offers section that really isn't that special - many of the prices seem really quite expensive and very few customers appear to ever buy any of it. After 10 minutes walking round a mostly empty Lidl store unable to get even a fraction of your shopping list because either they don't stock it or it's out of stock, you arrive at the tills to find only one is open and a massive queue has formed and seemingly no more staff to open another till. So you queue up at self pay to find every self pay till scans only a few items before the red light comes on requiring attention from the only staff member (who is currently sat on the only till that's open!). It takes 5 minutes to walk round their empty stores and about 15 minutes or more to actually pay and get out the place. Absolutely horrible stores, personally I can't see many families shopping in them, other than for the odd bits and pieces, because it's impossible to get what you want. I'd be amazed if the discounters aren't losing customers left right and centre to the likes of Tesco and Asda - in my opinion they started off on the right track but they've totally blown it, their availability is shocking and they've cut staffing down so much that their stores have become a joke to try and do your shopping in.
Good point about eating in, with people eating in more.
Less ready meals maybe and more meals cooked from scratch to save money. I like the Tesco ad campaign about how you can feed a family cheaply if you cook yourself.
Sensible and timely.
Yes good 5.5-6% div yield, may take a short-term profit drop due to customer shop choice, but overall, below fair value SP!
looks OK (but not great) to me. Long term this will bounce back to 250p and now seems a good chance to lock in a bargain. Clubcard is very popular and as energy and interest rates start to bite more people will be staying home and eating in. Not good outlook for hospitality and travel stocks though.
Nice 3.85p Dividend to be payed on 25th November ex divi 14 October.
thats not bad news
Considering the bad news and lies we have been hit with in recent days the TSCO RNS today is honest and not at all depressing; well done bod. JJ
I have to say Pearls, I had the same thought. It's been a while since I've been exposed here, but that RNS looked surprisingly downbeat. I can't see how that's going to light a fire under the SP.
How is that a profit Warning when they're still within their profit guidance??
Have you been reading the same report I have?
Not going to be a pretty day for Tesco shareholders today.
could not agree more. i seldom go in aldi now because of the same reason and theres no continuity of goods, ie scotch pies today and none for months. i dont know much about profits and shares going up and down but my local store is absolutely bouncing with customers, also the staff are always very helpful so that must help eh.
i think it has a lot to do with all the fantastic offers they have and such a wide range of products in stock.
the tesco Clubcard is a bonus aswell cutting even more off the bill. (quack quack lol).
i think all the supermarkets and staff do a fantastic job all year round but i have to asy my favourite has to be tesco every time.
