"The NHS patient safety watchdog has launched an investigation into failings by the NHS 111 telephone advice service which may have cost the lives of people with Covid-19."
Inquiries are always welcome, asks questions and are needed to improve service.
There are usually inquiries every year when people die due to mis diagnosis by hospital doctors in A&E, maternity, GP mis diagnosis etc. Patients sent home and told to take paracetamol etc.
Boris Johnson has also announced an inquiry into how the pandemic was handled. Do you think Parliament will be permanently abolished if the inquiry finds failings?
I would expect the inquiry to recommend improvements which should be followed through.
"Call handlers did not seem to recognise that conditions such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis made patients more likely to fall seriously ill with Covid."
Covid was new, doctors were learning as they went along.
Call handlers and TLY follow the script, which is produced by, um, professional clinical staff at NHS. If the script is wrong then it's not the call handlers nor TLY's fault. It's no different to the 999 service with their call handlers.
The NHS patient safety watchdog has launched an investigation into failings by the NHS 111 telephone advice service which may have cost the lives of people with Covid-19.
The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) has begun looking into what advice the service gave to several callers who rang during the pandemic seeking its help because they were unwell.
The probe follows a series of disclosures in the Guardian last year by David Conn about serious problems with NHS 111’s performance, some of which are claimed to have led to deaths. He revealed that:
People who were critically ill with Covid died after they were wrongly told to stay at home rather than seek medical help at hospital.
Call handlers did not seem to recognise that conditions such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis made patients more likely to fall seriously ill with Covid.
Nurses who worked for NHS 111 said the service was unsafe because staff were not able to make clinical assessments about how ill patients were, and had been given only four hours’ training.
The Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice Group believes that several hundred of its members had a relative die after calling 111 and being told that they should stay at home. They have demanded a public inquiry into the service’s record during the pandemic.
So you have heard doctors commenting on NHS 111 come off it,try to stop lying, doctors never discuss such things with other people around ,it would be a breach of confidentiality. so pull the other one.

"GP's resent encroachment on their clinical judgment and workload."
Do you live on top of Ben Nevis???
In what way does NHS 111, Urgent Care centres encroach on GPs clinical judgement or workload? You previously mentioned patients should go to A&E rather than call NHS 111. Doesn't that encroach on GP's judgement or workload?
The fact is NHS 111 & UCC exist to reduce GPs workload. They exist to provide the patient with choice if they are unable to get an appt by phoning their GP at 8am(as you suggested).
"I've heard GP's saying it’s useless."
That's a climbdown from saying GPs and hospitals are not impressed with NHS 111. Out of the thousands of GPs/hospitals, is there a majority who have stated that they are not impressed with NHS 111/UCC? What areas have you heard that they are not impressed. Ben Nevis, Outer Hebrides???
WELL he < TRICKY>would ,wouldn't he ? , He lies about everything he cannot answer or back up
His so called facts are about as straight as a banana ,when you read something Tricky understand it and learn and don't warp the content to what you think it should be.
I may know the difference between a trivial health issue but many callers to NHS 111 may not.
GP's resent encroachment on their clinical judgment and workload.
So why did it even start? What interests or whose careers were behind it? Are still behind it?
I've heard GP's saying it’s useless.
Tricky,
""Doctors and hospitals are not terribly impressed with NHS 111."
So no evidence to backup your statement. You were clearly making it up then.
"Use your brain to decide whether to call 'out of hours surgery doctors or put your trust in NHS 111."
You've gone from phoning your GP at 8am, going to A&E and now to calling 'out of hours surgery doctors"...lol
It's good then that TLY's Urgent Care Division includes Urgent Care/Walk in Centres and NHS 111. UCC/Walk in Centres are run by um, Drs/Nurses!!!
The purpose of Urgent Care is to prevent unnecessary visits to A&E/GPs. It's a different level of service for non-emergencies. Whereas NHS 999 is for emergencies. I assume you know that a heart attack is an emergency and a cut on your finger is not!!!
Your comment clearly shows you don't know TLY's business model:
1) Urgent Care - NHS 111, Urgent Care Centres/Walk in Centres.
2) Planned Care
3) Insourcing.

"Doctors and hospitals are not terribly impressed with NHS 111."
Based on evidence , please show
Also wrong about NHS 111 , there is a tier system from semi educated advisors to fully trained staff.
Totally provide fully trained staff and detailed in contract with NHS.
So you made that statement up
Doctors and nurses are medically trained and have experience.
Operatives from the NHS 111 are typically not medically trained.
Use your brain to decide whether to call 'out of hours surgery doctors or put your trust in NHS 111.

"Doctors and hospitals are not terribly impressed with NHS 111."
Do you live on top of Ben Nevis????
Can you provide links showing evidence to back up your stance that doctors and hospitals are not impressed with NHS or is this yet another statement that you made up?
Tricky please show the report on your statement "Doctors and hospitals are not terribly impressed with NHS 111"
Please do not say this was a personal conversation as this would entice that its a made up statement.
You either need medical attention or you don't.
If you can't contact your doctor at least on the phone (if out of hours) then go to A&E.
I went to my doctor (pre-covid) with pains in my chest, he said it was not heart-attack related and
said that if I was concerned again I should just go straight to A&E.
No mention of 111.
Doctors and hospitals are not terribly impressed with NHS 111.
otherwise phone my G.P. at 8 am for an appointment on the day , good luck with that not seen GP in 16 months as been a phone call and reply is you have a 3 day appointment by phone.
NHS 111 been great have had two appointment with out of hours clinic ( 40 min drive from local doctors ) but then at least got seen by a in person doctor.
Does it help if patients are referred to hospital A&E by NHS 111 staff?
No!
Hospital A&E departments do not always accept referrals anyway.
Some condemn NHS 111 as dangerous.
Nurses are employed with minimal training and don’t have expertise in diagnosis and clinical decision-making.
Tick-box computer choices are relied upon.
If I have a medical issue and feel it is serious I will go to A&E, otherwise phone my G.P. at 8 am for an appointment on the day.
Tricky,
"Who relies on NHS 111?"
"Awareness of the NHS 111 service is low."
You miss the simply point as usual.
The govn wanted to push NHS 111 to help reduce the length A&E waiting times. There are simply too many unnecessary visits to A&E which wastes NHS time and money. Unnecessary visits also pushes up waiting times for those who really need the service.
"Awareness of the NHS 111 service is low."
The point is NHS 111 service is in the public's mind as the first port of call. The different services available will follow through, lower awareness means greater potential.
According to Yougov and not BB posters:
84% said they were aware they could call NHS 111 for urgent medical advice.
70% said they were more likely to call NHS 111 than go straight to A&E
That suggests there is good awareness of NHS 111, doesn't it?. ;-)
https://www.healthwatch.co.uk/blog/2021-03-09/nhs-111-first-making-difference
I have personally used NHS111 on several occasion, as have many of my acquaintances, and the overall opinion is that this is an extremely valuable resource. It has been particularly useful since the advent of Covid, when contacting our own doctors had been almost impossible.
The results of my calls have ranged between being given pertinent advice to getting an immediate " out of hours" appointment with a doctor at the local hospital.
Who relies on NHS 111?
Many feel it is not useful at all.
Many elderly people will not even consider using it.
"After an extremely long conversation where I had to give so much information, I then had to go through the whole conversation again when passed on. Frustrating, upsetting and a waste of time.”
Awareness of the NHS 111 service is low.
80% of polling respondents were not aware that NHS 111 could reserve time-slots at GP's and 73% were not aware they could reserve time-slots at A&E.
Many calls were not connected to GP's and NHS 111 is not properly linked into other services.
Where it is linked to A&E then A&E are often not interested & send people home, saying nothing to worry about. They often seem surprised 111 has sent them."
Great to see new UCC contracts come through.
Good to see more insourcing work.
Note the contract extensions are for Think 111 First. Covid has put NHS 111 firmly on the public's mind as the first port of call for healthcare needs. The govn always wanted to promote NHS 111 as part of reducing A&E waiting times. Covid has propelled NHS 111 and done the job for the govn.
TLY's diversified business model working well:
1) Urgent Care
2) Planned Care
3) Insourcing
