China will retaliate against AUKUS of that there is no doubt. It may be a long shot but a gold backed yuan would be a clever way to do it. Really set a cat amongst the pigeons….
Or they could invade Taiwan but that’s quite a bit messier.
Good morning DartFrog, your post while providing food for thought, leaves out some salient info.
We could never ask Russia to join the EU, because of their appalling human rights issues, and also the amount of debt Russia currently has. Not impossible in the future, if the grip Putin has disappears, and we get free elections.
As someone who has family in ex soviet block countries, I can tell you they would be horrified if Russia was allowed to join the EU, as it would completely destroy their security.
It's not just the threat of military action, but also the political regimes that exist in the host countries.
Look what is happening in Poland and Hungary, unless we in the west can understand that the mindset of these countries who were under soviet rule need time to fully evolve. We need another 20-30 years to allow these former Soviet states to adapt and become truly democratic.
On AUKUS, I welcome this. It has come at the right time. China are having problems feeding their population with high debt levels, and people starting to protest.
This is the worst time for China to confront AUKUS, as they cannot afford it.
I believe we will always have conflict and tension within the world, but the future of AUKUS may go somewhere to achieving a better balance, and hopefully less wars.
The great problem with the world at the moment is that it has become too confrontational. The west, I.e the Americans and its supporters still believe they can rule the world, despite getting a bloody nose in Afghanistan. Yet there are others who have other ideas, e.g. the Chinese and Russians! Now even the West is getting fractionallised with the native English speakers falling out with the rest, e.g. the EU.
Not wishing to get into a debate about BREXIT, it is unfortunate that the new AUKUS pact is splitting the west, whereas we need more unification. The EU should have been inviting Russia to join the block, rather than push them further away. Likewise, like it or not, our economy is very dependent on China so why push them away. Surely the world will work better without these confrontational blocks.
So how does this affect South America, Ecuador and Solgold? In my eyes, South America which is basically western looking, has been ignored by the other blocks until now and has been left to its own devices. They have had the west's finger wagged at them from time to time, but, up until now, have not moved out of their sphere of influence. The Andes are full of resources which the world needs more and more, especially, at present, copper. And that now is where Ecuador comes in, but it would be far better for the rest of us if the world could fight over it peacefully!
The Chinese and the west might figuratively fight over Ecuador's copper, but if we stop the Chinese getting it, it will affect us in that goods which include copper, I.e. mainly electrical big or small, will become more expensive or even unavailable.
So what I am saying is that the west should stop trying to force their ideologies on other countries and live in a spirit of peace and cooperation. However, Lasso and Ecuador have a difficult balancing act to follow trying to sell its copper to everyone who wants it. This is probably to Solgold's advantage.
I apologise for my ramblings but I hope you understand what I am trying to say.
Frog
The Chinese were everywhere already, the weaker the jurisdiction, the more likely are to operate in absence of Western companies. Also, more importantly the easier they can coerice and bribe there way into securing strategic resources and keeping it out the hands of West, specifically U.S.
Chinese are already back in Afghanistan and reopening worlds 2nd biggest copper mine.

Cadell, yes think your right there they will be on the look out ,put the for sale flag up solg !!:)
China having fallen out of love with Australia in a big way, I see them looking for raw material resources elsewhere - Africa and S. America. That cannot be bad for us.
