Add, vote "none of the above". Did you ever watch Brewsters Millions?
Bozi, you seem to be ignoring a few major contributors to our current malaise:
1) Cameron inherited a basket case economy.
2) The pandemic and our utterly insane over-reaction to it.
3) Ukraine.
Having said that, the Tories are utterly useless, but so too are the Labour Party - the Liberals are simply beyond the pale. For me, this represents a major conundrum as, for the first time in my life, I have absolutely no idea who I'll vote for at the next election.
...and there lies the issue.
What you're saying is that anyone who isn't Thatcher or of that ilk is a socialist, which is the very same concept that you were criticising thr left for last night.
The undeniable facts are:
1. The party wearing blue have been at the wheel in the UK since 2010.
2. In that time they have elected 3 PMs and undemocratically promoted 2 more
3. The one that was most like Thatcher was outstayed by a lettuce
Whatever our views, much of what has happened in that time leaves us where we are today.
Ahh well back to bed it is then
The undercut the UK because they understand that lowering taxes attracts business. The UK could do this tomorrow but we have got socialists at the wheel who cannot grasp this basic fact.
Ecuador, if it had a conservative leader, could do the same. Lower taxes, promote mining and attract the big boys. Is it better to have 15% tax from 5 large mines or 25% from 1?
As recently as 2008, Ireland along with the other PIIGS were considered the basket case of Europe.
We start the day with shock and awww!
(Awww, no news)
Add, the same thought had occurred to me also given that I recently posted my praise of NAL for lampooning those with inside contacts! Oh the irony 🙄
Completely get that.
In Ireland's case though you have to factor in their advantages, bargaining power and their economic position. They know they can undercut the UK and snare a significant portion of it's business and they do it pretty well. It has done in my industry for years and there won't be a change any time soon.
Agree with some of your other points and disagree with others. Don't want to turn this into a longer political debate especially with some of the view that SOLG news of some sort is about to drop.
Oh, the irony!
Nal, ever since you arrived on this site you've spent your time berating people for posting stuff about rumoured takeovers etc, and here you are doing the exact same thing!
Anyway, let's hope you're right.
I'm already up an waiting, just had my breakfast.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!!!
Evening all. Hope all these jungle drums and words on the street are true !!

"How do you suppose Ecuador is going to pay it's debts and drag itself off the canvas under a low tax pro growth regime?"
See Ireland...currently running a huge SURPLUS with Corporation tax at just 12.5%
Have a look at the Laffer curve, the basic premise is that if you charge 0% tax you won't take any tax and that if you charge 100% tax then nobody would work as there is no point working for nothing. Between those two parameters is a distribution curve that identifies the maximum efficiency for raising tax revenue.
The problem with left wing people is that they simplistically think that the higher you raise taxes, the more you take in tax revenue and therefore the more you can spend. 1970s Britain was not dissimilar to now, unions holding the country to ransom, rampant tax hikes and all that happened was the rich fled the country and we ended up taxing them 98% of nothing, which brought in ÂŁ0.
The ideal is surely a situation where people feel motivated to work, and for that to happen they need to be allowed to keep as much of their own money to spend as they wish. That is blindingly obvious. If you can benefit from enormous state spending without putting a bean in, then why you would get off your fat lazy backside every morning and put a shift in?
Novice. Believe it or not, your tongue in cheek post is not I believe far off the mark.
The talk on the street here is that there has been some sort of breakthrough in the negotiations and news is round the corner. Not tomorrow and not 60p, but a deal is in sight,
How do you suppose Ecuador is going to pay it's debts and drag itself off the canvas under a low tax pro growth regime?
How long do you think it'll take at a steady 4-5%pa?
I'm not advocating high taxes either by the way. Why would I as an investor of a company in Ecuador?
You have to step away from the ideal sometimes and work both sides of the equation.
I'm not going to get draw into naming countries operating to the left of the spectrum because that wasn't the point I was making.
You could, however, look at a country like Norway for example, a country with both socialist and conservative representation and influence. A country that appears to have balanced both sides of the coin relatively successfully. Widely recognised a free and fully functioning democracy with a robust structure.
Lee Anderson doesn't represent the numbers you think he does. He is about to find that out, along with a number of other pretenders who spurned their chance with this country. I think you'll find that many doesn't disagree with the principle itself but do take exception at how it was conveyed. Anderson's politics were suitable back in the 70s but they have no place in the 21st century.
Dont watch the BBC either. Haven't watched it for years. Don't watch GBeebies either.
This is the measure that is often used to identify the most prosperous countries, rather than straight GDP. Sure China collectively is the second biggest economy in the world but would you really count that as a success when per head of capita they languish in 72nd place in the world?
Look at the top 20, they're all as you'd expect. Nordic countries, rich Arab states, the US etc. One notable exception is Ireland who are remarkably third in the world on this ranking. That is because they have a low tax, low interference state that attracts vast amounts of business. The exact opposite of socialism.
Ecuador is 102nd with the average GDP per capita just half that of lowly China. Surely a pro growth low tax conservative government could fire them up that chart and make all Ecaudorians feel better off. They need a pragmatic regime not a jam tomorrow regime hoping to fund itself from punishing business and thereby driving it away.
I bet RK's wife has added a load at these crazy prices. It would seem RK himself has been long lost on the golf course :)
I'd be more than happy to discuss any examples of successful socialist countries and how living in them was ultimately great for all of their citizens. There just isn't one and you know that full well. That is why socialism is a failed experiment best consigned to history. Unfortunately, I think a whole new generation of idiots are going to have to find out the hard way in the UK what a high tax, high interference nation with social unrest and soaring crime means to our everyday lives.
As for your sideswipe at Lee Anderson, he actually represents far more people than you imagine when he tells immigrants that if they don't like our ÂŁ6bn per annum hospitality they should turn around and eff off back to France.
Just because the BBC doesn't paint this picture for you, doesn't mean that the vast majority of people in the UK aren't fed up with the wokery and immigration. The ambitious self-employed were hit not only by the socialist wealth grab that was Furlough, but subsequently by an enormous 30% riise in taxation when they're trying to recover to pay for socialist policies.
Trust me that when the straw breaks the camel's back arrives (and it will soon), anything ESG/BLM/Diversity and Green will disappear in a flash of violence and unrest. This nation is divided purely because the left cannot accept the defeat of Brexit.
You've got to ask yourself why that is.
Of course, it might have something to do with the general sickened state many people find themselves in after watching the western world governed rather shambolically by governments promoting conservatism. That isn't me, that's the record book.
You even flag the policy of, for example, communist China when you talk about their energy strategy. Surely they should have been the brainchild of those favouring prosperity, opportunity, free markets, etc?
Success and failure are absolute terms based on criteria that can differ from one person to the next. You'd have no interest considering anything a socialist government did as a success, so there's no point discussing this any further.
You ought to be mindful of those champagne conservatives whilst you're at it. There's a couple amongst the ERG. I suspect you're a rather large fan of one of the biggest ladder kickers this country has known in our lifetimes, but that doesn't suit your rhetoric eh.
I can't and won't find fault with the ambitious, hard workering aspirers that you mention. However, let's not let this tell the full story of the right where there's plenty of grifters. Unfortunately for every entrepreneur there's a Michelle Mone and for every business owner there's a Lee Anderson, and so on and so on.
Agree FTJNY, my point was simply that the more conservative candidate is more pro-business and therefore better for those of us trying to make money out of this frustrating investment.
The woke nutters just can't resist the chance to push their virtue signalling rubbish at every juncture, even if it is at the cost of their own investments. These clowns would be better off putting money in charity tins and living off grid.
The sooner we get back to calling a spade a spade and not worrying who is offended, the better.
Agree with your sentiments but as the saying goes it’s not over till the fat lady sings. IMO there are similarities with the last Presidential Election when Lasso only just scraped into 2nd place in the first round and was some way behind the first placed left wing candidate. So here we are a few years later and it’s a bit like deja vu. Noboa like Lasso has come from nowhere and is trailing the front running left wing candidate but maybe like last time around the right wing will coalesce behind Noboa and take him to the Presidency? It’s certainly all still to play for and my money is on Noboa to replicate what Lasso did in 2021
Well I'm off to bed early tonight as I'm too excited about tomorrow morning'S RNS
sleep tight all
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!!!
Socialists largely fall into two categories.
1. "Champagne socialists" - people so wealthy that oppressive tax regimes don't matter to them. The goal of these people is to achieve a moral superiority whilst kicking away the ladder that got them where they are so that others can't enjoy that success
2. Lazy, Entitled or Unskilled people. These people have nothing to offer society either because they can't or they won't. Their version of socialism is to drag everybody down into the gutter with them.
In both cases, the people who suffer are ordinary hard working citizens, people with ambition who want to work hard to achieve a better standard of living than merely existing. People who take chances, buy property, work two jobs, set up businesses and try create wealth. These are the people who are the victims of both sides of the poison that is socialism.
The bullish story grows for SOLG. You wouldn't know it looking at the sp but majority of miners beaten up of late with bellwether congloms like Anglo and Glencore trading at levels last seen when Covid broke and DOW30 tested sub 20k.
But all is well at SOLG. Key red tape hurdles jumped and signed with Ecuador gov. Election concerns now behind us. Both candidates pro mining but no doubt about it, Noboa is in with a chance if he can get the Topic vote/partnership going. If Noboa wins... when mining looks set for a star role in Ecuador's future.
I can understand a few on the sidelines being pessimistic or negative toward SOLG but none can ignore the bullish backdrop forming now. The dull summer period coming to an end too means one thing.... SOLG sp should soon be reflecting the long awaited reveal. Scott and Bob et al must deliver or else it's going to be curtains for them at the AGM. They've had long enough now. Time to deliver or.... else!
