"Synairgen might sign a deal for outpatient exclusitvity in the States but it would never add in the hospital rights - nor would it be asked." I agree, and I don't think I ever said that. That would be an unreasonable ask. I'm saying I think a big chunk ring-fenced for US purchase if and when results prove to their satisfaction that it's worth buying. Up to them how and where they use it, stockpile it, smoke it or eat it.
And yes, I think it's entirely possible that the UK Gov are playing the quiet card on our European P3 *until* results are known. That will allow UK gov to buy what they need on the back of a successful P3 and shout about it then. And it will leave a ring-fenced stash for the US Gov at a future date. No one's toes gets trodden on this way. The UK Gov bods won't get accused of being last in queue for a British drug, or embarrassingly accused of passing it to the Americans to trial when the need is great here too (because Joe public won't care who got 1st dibs as long as he gets a whiff of it when he's sick in Hospital here in Blighty). In essence, I think it's a political dance where all parties benefit. Seem logical?
Docdaneeka,
See below links, some food for thought. Who knew pharma world was so full of shady deals?
To answer your question though, no, I don't think we are semi-secret (lol) - if my hunch is correct it's perfectly possible that we've signed NDA's, that's run of the mill stuff in business.
I'm not saying this is what happened, I'm simply not ruling it out because IMO it is plausible. I tend to look for what's hidden out of view. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there. And if my hunch is correct, then that presents it's own set of (big) opportunities. That really is my point.

There does appear to be a culture within the DHSC of not supporting British companies. This not only applies to SNG, but also, for example, to the UK diagnostic companies, which have done a fantastic job, but have been largely ignored or, in some cases, treated appallingly. I wonder if it is something to do with a cultural resentment within the DHSC against the private sector, notably the UK private sector. There is quite a pattern now that going overseas, for some reason, seems to be OK, and the hurdles to doing business there (often at a generous price that would never be available to a UK company) seem to be much lower. I know Horby is nothing directly to do with the DHSC, but his alleged comments about SNG are perhaps another illustration of how this wilful disdain of the UK private sector appears to have infected public decision-making.
so if UK government is ordering treatments for, what is it, 600,000 courses - that's (very roughly) one course for every approx 1% of UK population. Imagine if all governments in the world decided to buy treatments for 1% of their populations - that's an awfully big requirement (i.e. 800 million courses). SNG needs to secure less than 1% of this market to multi bag
I'v ebeen grappling with UK Gov's seeming 'hands off' approach to Synairgen has always been baffling. Could this explain it:
Back at the start of the Pandemic when Synairgen were going through the motions with the US authorities to get selected for ACTIV trial, I suspect the financial burden of the clinical trials were taken on by the USA *on the basis that UK Gov would relinquish first dibs at supply were the drug successful*. The Trump Admin did this with other companies, so why not Synairgen? It explains why UK Gov dare not mention our name, but have, as RM has always said, helped us through various agencies, behind the scenes, to cut through some of the bureaucracy and smooth the path as it were. RM has always praised their 'support'. It would also explain why we abruptly pulled out of the other UK trial in 2020. And it would explain why, at the outset, RM and Co referred to the fact that "whatever happens, Synairgen will always be a British success story".
Thoughts?
When he said it would be available this winter to the UK population, did he mean via a trial?
Interesting point about Molnupiravir in relation to the speed of Synairgens trial from a recent article on the drug.
“A final point to consider is why this took Merck so long; Move-Out had begun last October, yet with the Covid-19 pandemic raging in many of the countries in which the trial was run it took 10 months to generate 775 patients’ worth of 29-day data. Perhaps this illustrates just how low hopes had been”
Had Radio 5 on this morning, They had a senior doctor on who said that ahead of Sajid announcement they were under the impression that the 2 drugs would not be available this winter and there was no information about how/when they would be administered to a patient.
It seemed like the Health Secretary either misspoke of shall we say 'spoke politically'.
I see the governments willingness to place these pre orders as a huge positive for SNG. They could not announce anything re SNG yesterday considering that in term of published trial data the SNG trial size is so far very small (although very very good). Only announced advance to Activ 3 yesterday morning so no way we were getting included. But look at the safety data for SNG..... that makes approval so much more likely.
Roll on P3 output.
The Pfizer drug isn’t expected to complete trials until next year so very much in the same time line as Synairgen. Phase 3 only started a few weeks ago.
Very unlikely the MHRA will be authorising that in 2021
Oakleaf. I saw that this morning. The same thing crossed my mind. Interesting times.
Sounds fairly convincing to me - hardly surprising but we are in for a wonderful future I strongly believe!!
ah yes of course. Cheap pills
Pfizer Ritonavir and Merck Molnupiravir. Neither of these are approved by MHRA as trials are not yet complete
Edward Argar (health minister) said on BBC Breakfast (7.33am, rewind and see for yourself) that the UK Govt. have pre-ordered 680000 doses of 2 anti-viral drugs which have yet to be approved. I wonder what they are?
Absolutely! Bumping this up
show one thing imho - the drug could be pre ordered at any time now like the pfizer one and gov's will be scrambling to stock up - no gov wants the fiasco of not getting vaccines again. why would you not pre order now
