The facts that wards are full of unvaccinated patients doesn’t bode well for any hospital worker relying on surviving Covid-19 to gain natural immunity.
I’d be very concerned about the competency of anyone working in the medical field who thought getting the virus was the better way to protect themselves than having the vaccine.
I would argue that natural immunity is better than vaccine induced immunity. And those carry on that somehow if a person isn’t vaccinated it’s putting other people at risk I find a little fabricated.
I think the statistics show that the vaccine reduces illness but if you look at Israel, I think it proves that the vaccine does nothing for transmission. Blaming unvaccinated is a scape goat for the vaccine which isn’t as effective as people believed or hoped.
JoeyD, the mandate isn't to protect the Idaho healthcare staff, it's to protect the patients. Wonderful if you're a nurse or surgeon who has acquired immunity through natural infection, only that doesn't give you a magic shield to stop carrying and shedding the virus all over your vunerable patients. To be clear, natural immunity does not stop Delta transmission.
By the by, I know a home care worker well who has refused the vaccine for a year despite the obvious aim to protect the elderly in her care from her transmitting them Covid. This same lady , jumps feet first for a jab when it looks like a hen weekend abroad has to be missed because she's not vaccinated. I'm hearing way too many stories like this of selective outrage. Doc is 100% correct, they can't have it both ways.
Re-read the sentence in the newspaper article you quoted its deliberately misleading. They can't fire anyone due to the legal issues so many are currently suspended or have resigned. End result is still a reduction in staff.
Officials who have blundered with the mandate don't believe a sizeable reduction of staff where the national guard has been drafted in is contributing to a crisis in care? Who are they kidding :)
Reading through the local press in that area the problem appears to be unvaccinated patients straining hospital resources more than hospital workers being sacked for not taking the vaccine
“Officials from both healthcare providers told KTVB that their vaccine requirements have not led to a single employee getting fired. While some staff at St. Luke's resigned, it is untrue that their requirements have led to Idaho activating crisis standards of care”
Intentionally getting rid of staff that do crucial roles looking after people will have very negative consequences. If there is no one to feed people, adminster medication, lift people out of bed, make periodic checks on people with dementia to keep them safe etc
What do you think the end results will be?
Your the one who is witless if you can't see the outcomes.
" you are advocating letting residents die of neglect/malnutrition."
What a witless comment. Nobody is advocating this.
Yes good idea get rid of the nursing home staff too in a sector that aleady has mass shortages of labour.
Think about it you are advocating letting residents die of neglect/malnutrition.
Idaho introduced vaccine mandates for health care staff and now find their hospitals short of staff as many have either been suspended or resigned.
The fact that these same nurses for 18 months were heros and with prior infection and repeat exposure to the virus will have superior aquired natural immunity makes the policy even more stupid.
A truly terrible policy that self inflicts staff shortages means likely collapse of health care system in many Western countries.
One of my friends in the U.S reports
The entire State of Idaho has just been declared to be operating under “crisis standards of healthcare” – “non-urgent or less-urgent care may not be provided in order to ensure timely response to the most severe life-or-death emergencies. That concern extends to 911 calls for emergency medical service.”
The Idaho National Guard was called out a week ago to help with whatever they can. There are less than 6 ICU beds available in the entire State.
From the Director of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare – “The situation is dire – we don’t have enough resources to adequately treat the patients in our hospitals, whether you are there for COVID-19 or a heart attack or because of a car accident. Our hospitals and healthcare systems need our help. The best way to end crisis standards of care is for more people to get vaccinated. It dramatically reduces your chances of having to go to the hospital if you do get sick from COVID-19. In addition, please wear a mask indoors in public and outdoors when it’s crowded to help slow the spread.”
