"Zelda and I have stocked up on red wine, whiskey, rum, vermouth, absinthe, white wine, sherry, gin, and lord, if we need it, brandy. Please pray for us."
Only a month's worth? Cutting it a bit close there aren't we, F. Scott?
Thanks Chris.
Well said breatheasy! Mr Big, In reference to the what they were saying 100 years ago;
A LETTER FROM F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, QUARANTINED IN 1920 IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE DURING THE SPANISH INFLUENZA OUTBREAK.
Dearest Rosemary,
It was a limpid dreary day, hung as in a basket from a single dull star. I thank you for your letter. Outside, I perceive what may be a collection of fallen leaves tussling against a trash can. It rings like jazz to my ears. The streets are that empty. It seems as though the bulk of the city has retreated to their quarters, rightfully so. At this time, it seems very poignant to avoid all public spaces. Even the bars, as I told Hemingway, but to that he punched me in the stomach, to which I asked if he had washed his hands. He hadn’t. He is much the denier, that one. Why, he considers the virus to be just influenza. I’m curious of his sources.
The officials have alerted us to ensure we have a month’s worth of necessities. Zelda and I have stocked up on red wine, whiskey, rum, vermouth, absinthe, white wine, sherry, gin, and lord, if we need it, brandy. Please pray for us.
You should see the square, oh, it is terrible. I weep for the damned eventualities this future brings. The long afternoons rolling forward slowly on the ever-slick bottomless highball. Z. says it’s no excuse to drink, but I just can’t seem to steady my hand. In the distance, from my brooding perch, the shoreline is cloaked in a dull haze where I can discern an unremitting penance that has been heading this way for a long, long while. And yet, amongst the cracked cloud line of an evening’s cast, I focus on a single strain of light, calling me forth to believe in a better morrow.
Faithfully yours,
F. Scott Fitzgerald?
Not much has changed it would seem.
Breathe - I'm sure that's not what they were saying during the Spanish flu epidemic 100 years ago.
Biggest difference, imho, is that one is well-known, well-researched, has a vaccine, we know how to treat it and our bodies know how to react to it (evolution?). Covid is new and unknown. I have a feeling that in 10-20 years you'll get covid and think "Oh bugger, caught covid again. Will have to stay off work for 3 days". Covid will mutate, our bodies will mutate, new treatments will be developed.
It's the combination of the two this winter that is to worry about imho.
Well said, breath easy!
1. Both kill yes......but have you ever heard of flu killing health care workers like nurses and doctors OR bus drivers. If covid-19 infections ramp up there will be less and less nurses and doctors left in hospital to look after you as they isolate or recover from bad infection like us already happening in Brazil, Mexico with some smaller peripheral hospitals running threadbare.
2. Even in peak flu season we don't have to decide which patient gets a ventilator and who is left to die. With covid sadly if 2 brothers 45 yrs old are infected the one with children gets the last ventilator and the one without is left to die on the ward.
3. Flu does not destroy your lung tissue, brain or kidneys or the heart as your recover leaving a life long sequelae and restricted life in a 50 or 60 year old . Covid does period !
So those of you saying flu kills more so what.....get covid infection and compare.
