Konar,
Many thanks.
Konar thanks for a great post. Nearly understood that ! ATB
As in cancels the need for other vaccines !
And I can't spell. Doh!! Back to bed...
And 'Scancell' is an anagram of 'cancels'!!
Something light hearted.
‘Moronic’ is an anagram of ‘Omicron’
RR - a booster dose gives a significant boost in immunity over two doses alone, and a mix and match approach gives a stronger response than a single supplier. The advice from the likes of Johnathon Ball - don't wait around for a mutation specific vaccine, a booster will give you better protection irrespective of the variant. I believe the reduction to 3 months is not so much that immunity is waning then, but more that it gives a much stronger response after 3 doses, and the sooner people have that the more likely we are to suppress the pandemic - particularly Omicron.
However, having said all of that - a laboratory assessment of the "strength" of an immune response is only somewhat useful. Data from the real world will evidence how effective the booster programme is. A 10 fold increase in immune response, doesn't necessarily result in a 10x reduction in cases. That is why the data from Israel's booster programme will be significant.
Ruck, I’m just happy that all the vaccines were developed so quickly!
A year+ ago I would have taken anything to get the protection!! :-D
Would that be a molotov cokctail?
Sorry, monoclonal cocctail?
Israel to release preliminary effectiveness information today. As far as we know Israelis were given 3 X Pfizer combo.
we may know more by end of day.
How about 2xPfizer + Moderna + Scancell?
roses,
Yes, too late for me!
better combo than 3 X Pfizer.
Any thoughts on 2x astra + Pfizer ?
Kash,
Just to add, it was found that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were more effective as a booster jab than the Astra-Zeneca regardless of what the initial two doses were. So you are probably better off with Pfizer+Pfizer booster than Pfizer+Astra-Z
Ruck, seems like you will have a good level of protection!
“ The high antibody levels and other strong immune responses elicited by mix-and-match regimens suggested they would offer good protection against disease. Still, “I was delighted to see that it’s as effective as one would expect,” says immunologist Martina Sester at Saarland University in Homburg, Germany. “This is really good news and this will certainly have influence on clinical practice.”
“These emerging effectiveness data support the use of these approved COVID-19 vaccines in either the standard or mixed schedules,” adds Matthew Snape, a vaccinologist at the University of Oxford, UK.
Kash,
My first two jabs were Astra-Zeneca, the booster was Moderna.
Two different manufacturers.
Ruck, My booster was called “Comirnaty” and I initially thought it was a different vaccine to the two Pfizer Biontech doses I had previously but it was the same Pfizer BioNTech vaccine.
The name change is due to the fact that drugs until approved for more than just emergency use have to be known by the company name. Once fully approved the company can give it a “brand” name. It is the same vaccine so I am not sure why you think the booster is a different vaccine.
TF,
I don't think anyone has suggested that existing vaccines will be "ineffective" against omicron, just "less effective". So long as there is enough recognisable code in the mutated version the vaccines may be able to do a job.
I guess the where boosters may help is that the booster is a different vaccine to the initial two jabs and therefore you increase effectivity - even against mutations.
Good point Ruck. I guess it’s easier to give maximum protection to those that are willing.
TF, I just hope that Omicron is far less serious than the dominant strain - Delta. If it is also more infectious then we may see the end of Delta…But as we say, it’s not just about the latest strain, it is what may come after. Maybe the only thing to kill Covid 19 is Covid 19?
Ruck I've been pondering that - IF the existing vaccines don't protect against Omicron, is an extra dose going to help ? And what next - boosters every month?
Another back of the mind point - IF as suggested, Omicron causes only mild symptoms, after the infection has gone, could it leave behind some more protection, even T-cells?
The UK gov are now asking people to get a booster jab just three months after their second dose.
Is this because effectivity of two jabs wanes after 3 months or giving a booster early still protects for as long as it would given after six months?
