Investorjohn5, I am posted this on 21st of February 2020 and was shot down in flames for it.
RE: Redceo.21 Feb 2020 18:43
Redceo you posted earlier "worse case scenario (which is awful) is that many hard working posties lose their jobs, the company is broken up, the shareholders get paid out".
But surely if RM became unviable that wouldn't be the case as the shares would be worthless and the shareholders would have nothing? The government would then have the responsibility of taking back control.
On the 31st of March 2014 the National Audit Office issued a report to the House of Commons regarding the Privatisation of Royal Mail. It is available to download from nap.org.uk.
On page 7 it states
"Privatisation has reduced taxpayer risk to support the universal postal service, but the government retains the ultimate responsibility. The government is responsible for ensuring continuation of the universal postal service. The UK population enjoys a more extensive universal postal service than is required under European
Union law, including Saturday collection and delivery. Royal Mail has responsibility for
delivering the universal service and is the only company with a national network and scale to provide this. Private capital has created an equity buffer to protect the taxpayer, and Ofcom could intervene if it assessed that the universal service was under threat or the company fails to meet service standards. A special administration regime would be triggered if Royal Mail should collapse, although the government has not quantified the
financial implications for the taxpayer if this occurred (paragraphs 1.2 to 1.3, and 2.22)"
Having sat on the sidelines watching what is going on here it was clear this was a business in terrible trouble even before this deadly virus started to circulate like wildfire. It’s hard to disagree with anything the union are saying, it’s clear now with the current situation that this is a business that never should have been privatised and has been badly run. They must be bleeding cash at a horrendous rate and I think when the current crisis is over not only in this country but worldwide people will be questioning what is important to society.
I had this on my watch list but I would say it’s looking at a government intervention in the coming months and that never ends well for shareholders, a sad situation all round.
@ Wolves no not at all there are very extenuating circumstances for it to stop. One being Royal Mail will never be able to reach their QoS targets and could be fined. So it is daft to continue and daft that managers are treating the industry as though it can just plod on with so many people off and it is this that is leading to bad decisions by managers in Do's and a lot if bad feeling. We will see if the Government do act on the CWU meeting they should do if they are sensible as for Rico I don't think he really gets it he doesn't care about any employees only his profits
mad if the USO ceases temporary then it ceases full stop as rico will argue that it is not needed...think about it.....
also mad as a company I would rather go on 50% turnover than none at all..... its like the 80% pay the govt are paying wages now.... who is going to pick up the pieces?????? ill tell you!!!!! me and you and every worker for decades..... there is no free meals mate...sorry
mad I am not lucky at all I use what god gave me which is common sense.... I understand its not the best under current circumstances and I believe everyone has a right and duty to themselves and others... I am a member of cwu as rejoined for the ballot of which seems very distant now....I am no drama queen or king just an average posty doing his very best to protect my family and friends and everyone around me...… if that becomes a problem then I apologise
Wolves because as you know full well you cant get through with half the staff can you. That is why the CWU are asking for the USO to cease until this is over. As for the CWU ****g up for employees I am glad you said employees as you are not a member which actually pleases me. Stop being a drama queen and get the stuff delivered you clearly don't have a problem in your office so you are lucky
derek a leaflet is the same as a stamp.... someone has paid for it to be delivered... however I agree that companies paying for it are a bit stupid..... look at dominos though.... we deliver their leaflets and they are booming
DerekR our posts overlapped as I was typing and listening to briefing at same time. Better for the business to say exactly where they are with PPE. Union very keen to keep service going as long as PPE in place.
jb if we go to a 3 day week then FACT 50% of jobs will be gone on foot after the virus has been eradicated....why go back when you get through with half the staff...…. cwu have fkd up for us employees and boosted shareholders imho
madasaballoon I didnt hear about Alloa/Lochgelly but did hear Paisley get a mention .I did have to take a couple of breaks. I think the business will respond and say they are getting as much PPE as they can and are distributing it but if there are demand issues they may struggle. I also think they will go for a three day week or prioritising items. I don't think Dave W was keen on the 3 day option. Listening to government briefing and just now ,talking about postal tests for Covid19 so I am sure both parties wouldn't want to compromise. It is absolutely right that the business must get any PPE out there ASAP.
I listened to an hour of Dave W and Terry P just sticking to the proposal they have put to the business and government, reiterating the point of being a great/critical public service. Meeting the business tomorrow to get their response. Union repeated its message, that if employees don't feel safe dont work and they should not work and the union will deal with any resulting issues. I do think some individuals/offices will remove themselves from the frontline. The comments on the web page were expressing extreme concerns and asking for both sides to take action urgently. Dreadful state of affairs IMO
