2019 Diggers & Dealers Presentation
Sandfire Resources’ bid to enter the African copper sector could be open to competition, with the underbidders on its $167 million offer for MOD Resources said to be looking at trumping the Australian miner’s 45c cash and scrip bid.
MOD’s board signed off on the Sandfire bid in June, in the absence of a better offer, but rivals pipped at the post by the Karl Simich-led copper explorer are believed to be considering a return to the table when the independent expert’s report on the transaction is released to the market this month.
Industry sources say the most likely candidate is London-listed Atalaya Mining, said to be keen to add African exposure to its Spanish copper projects.
Atalaya put itself on the market late last year but no deal materialised. In June it added London-based advisory firm Peel Hunt to its brokers, ahead of a potential trip to the market to raise cash for an acquisition.

Sandfire reaches record production with Monty ramp up
July 24, 2019
Sandfire Resources has delivered its highest quarterly production of the 2019 financial year during the June period as output at the Monty mine in Western Australia increased.
The company produced 18,519 tonnes of copper and 11,967 ounces of gold in the June quarter, with the Monty satellite mine continuing to ramp up its output.
Sandfire mined 76,091 tonnes at grades of 7.9 per cent copper at Monty for 6025 tonnes of contained copper and 3623 ounces of contained gold.
The strong quarter propels Sandfire to record annual copper and gold production, according to the company.
Sandfire expects its 2020 financial year production guidance to be within the range of 70,000–75,000 tonnes of copper, with gold production within the range of 38,000–42,000 ounces.
The company cemented DeGrussa’s mine life through to mid-2022 following an updated mine plan and ore reserves in June.
Outside of Australia, Sandfire is on track to deliver a feasibility study for the Black Butte copper project in the United States this year. The company expects to receive its mine operating permit in the second half of 2019.
Sandfire has also agreed to acquire ASX-listed MOD Resources, and with it, a “dominant land-holding” in the Kalahari copper belt in Botswana. This includes the advanced T3 project, which is scheduled to commence construction next year.
The company has also increased its stakeholding in the UK-based Adriatic Metals to 11.13 per cent to gain more exposure to high-grade polymetallic projects in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Sandfire beat a handful of rivals
It is understood Sandfire beat a handful of rivals to secure MOD, believed to include Greenstone, Appian and a few North American copper players.
The question is whether another party could bid over the top, given global interest in owners of copper assets of scale.
It's not the first time Sandfire has had a crack at MOD Resources. The Karl Simich-led company approached MOD's board in January with a takeover offer valuing the exploration junior well north of its $55 million market capitalisation.
MOD knocked back that offer on the basis that it undervalued the company and its strategic Botswana prospects.
