Safe dividend stocks Aviva legal and general BP
Hope this helps DYOR
The Chairman of LGEN is ex-Treasury, and probably still hard-wired into government group-think. I am surprised that LGEN paid a dividend last year in spite of Whitehall's nannying, which has continued and intensified. The website photos of the board show a lot of happy cheerful folk. so perhaps we have nothing to worry about.
Ex-Div date is given as 15 April 2021 with payment date of 27 May 2021. so if the final dividend is to remain flat then you will be looking at 12.64p.
I quote from the RNS dated 19/11:- "As 2020 is a pause year, the Board's current intention is to keep the final 2020 dividend flat.[4]
From 2021 the Board intends to grow the dividend at low to mid-single digits."
Also the final div was announced in April last year and the board did this in the face of the BOE telling them not to because of the government's virus panic.
eccles is the ex-divi date the end of april on L&G
and what has company said about divi %
been asked to check for a friend who is looking for safe divi stocks.
thanks steve.
What a strage thing to do when we are only a few weeks away from a dividend promised by the board.
Thinker, keep reinvesting dividends and the returns will soon go positive.....compound interest will do a lot of work for your son.
Barring a revolution you can put this one away and rest easy.
Blah blah blah, why do some people and especially politicians like to fill the atmosphere with meaniningless gobbledegook. Is it to impress? (NOT). Resonate = to fill with sound or vibration of nearby objects and enclosed spaces.
' . seems to be a very well regulated and well run company . '
except that the company's website says the company accepts the fashionable present-day gospel of 'despite Brexit', climate change, alphabet heresy, gender choice and who knows what other beguiling ideas wafting in through his apparently wide-open window.
How will this resonate when harnessed to the ancient alchemy performed by actuaries?
I bought LGEN at its peak of +300p in Q4 2019 as one investment in my son's ISA as I thought that it would be a stock offering steady yield with the bonus of dividend. I have been disapointed with the yield and having learnt a lot more about trending since then I realise that it will be a while till he is in profit with this. Having said that it seems to be a very well regulated and well run company and COVID will not have helped it. I'm holding LGEN for him and optimistic about the long term future. DYOR GLA
These are traditionally a good investment, paying a decent dividend. However do not lose sight of the trading opportunities. If/when the FTSE100 goes above 6800 these can exceed 300p and if/when the index goes below 6450 these can test 250p. Just saying.
Thanks to all for advice - especially to eccles for the sermon - I always thought that selling high and buying low was called "trading."
Try to keep your holdings in an ISA or pension wrapper, most brokers have a cheap reinvestment of dividend scheme so you can have the choice.
If outside such a scheme, the most effective action may be to sell outside and buy back inside. That will give you capital gains taxed at a lower rate and then future income is tax free.
P10, as y11 implies this sort of activity is gambling not investing. IMO gamblers tend to lose in the long run, just saying.
P10 its essentially a zero sum game. Sell with a profit of 15 or hold for a profit of 5 and a 10p divi.
Pros and cons in other respects, such as capital gains versus income tax etc
Sometimes that will work if your lucky. Sometimes you have to pay more just to get your shares back or loss them for ever. Good luck
For LTHs of LGEN, it is undoubtedly a good idea to hold and keep holding taking the divi each year. But suppose you hold 1000 shares and a divi of 10p per share is declared whilst your holding is showing a profit of 15p per share. Would it also not be a good idea to sell your holding immediately before xd, taking the profit of 15p per share, and then re-investing the total proceeds back into LGEN at the lower post xd sp. This could be repeated at each dividend declaration when the holding is showing a profit greater than the divi.
I am thinking of trying this at the forthcoming dividend declaration but can anyone advise if are there any drawbacks to the scheme?
Looking at the 5yr chart the big resistance point seems to be at 275p and if that breaks in a convincing fashion then I would suggest that £3 could be breached. A very solid share to hold for income and plenty of shares in the natural resource sector and elsewhere for the roller coaster rides !
With a P/E ratio of 8.4x and mid to high single digit annual growth projected for next 5 years it's a lovely Value play. Even taking a low end 5% pa growth for 5 years and the same P/E it suggests 330p over 5 years plus all those lovely divis growing at low to mid single digits pa
I agree with Robleo that this is a hold but, for those thinking of investing here for gain rather than dividends & re the recent quote "it seems to get around the £3 mark then drops back down again". The SP has only been £3 & slightly over once in the last 10 years for a short period between Q's 2&3 in 2019.
The current dividend yield of 6.77% is the option to buy here. This is not a share to buy at this price if you are looking to make a profit & sell, there are so many other stocks better placed for this investing style, all IMHO of course.
Archiepants good luck, lots of shares undervalued at the moment, I'm no expert, but be careful and don't put all your eggs in the basket, as they say
So interesting to read your post. I am currently researching L&G with a view to investing. I am a relative novice and found peoples thoughts and investment strategies very interesting. Thank you.
bluebud, not sure what you are looking for, but would say the likes of lgen, are one to hold long term, especially in a sipp or isa, it seems to get around the £3 mark then drops back down again, but good thing about it, is it pays a good dividend, which you can either use for income , or accumulation
