Great find there Jimb2. I think this is inevitable its just a question of when. It can't be too long as the mine has to be build and will cost more to retrofit larger scale working.
Typo should be JB Straubel,
One recent news release:
https://www.greencarcongress.com/2022/01/20220109-lfp.html
Last month Gotion High-Tech agreed to supply a large listed and unnamed US automaker with 200 GWh of LFP batteries between 2023 and 2028 in an indication of the auto industry’s reliance on Chinese production.
So that's 140,000 tonnes of LCE over five years or 28,000t/year, Sonora would struggle to ramp up to that under current known plans?

Well, it seems there's no question of oversupply for many years to come, JC Straubel is always an opinion to be respected.
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/12/tesla-co-founder-says-ev-sales-are-about-to-take-off-but-questions-whether-production-can-keep-up.html
Just a reminder for those looking at the demand side of LCE - for each Gwh of production requires 700 tonnes LCE and so this everyday news we are seeing and hearing is a clear indication that lithium is going to be in high demand for several years to come and production is already falling way short.
J curves
Blimey,

That's without solid-state, but what if Ganfeng does crack it?

Dubbed a lithium "supermarket" for its wide range of offerings, Ganfeng is delving into battery production itself. The company is set to start up a plant in its home city of Xinyu in 2023, where some analysts expect it to make solid-state batteries.
Little old KDNC, right time right place!
From the Seeking Alpha article it says that Ganfeng’s Li processing plants are all located in China. We know Ganfeng are planning to build a processing facility on Sonora - it’s only the capacity they’ve yet to publish and whether they include our JV areas. It’ll be their first plant outside of China and can directly target the American market both north and south as well as ship to Asia and Europe. Given that Li from soft rock/clay from Sonora is low cost, scaleable, top grade and can be processed in just 7 days from the mine and no money wasted in shipping non lithium bearing spoil. From chapter one of Economics for Dummies it makes sense for them to maximise the economies of scale and ‘go large’ … demand will surely be there.
They aren't spending $100s of millions just for 17ktpa when they want to produce 600ktpa globally, that's for sure.

‘Unprecedented’ margins: lithium prices defy forecasters

"The fact that #lithium supply can’t keep up with demand is validated by the price trends you have been seeing since late 2020. The real question now is what strategic plans will battery makers & OEMs put in place to deal with a problem that is here to stay for an extended period."
Nice article, surely only a matter of time for KDNC and Ganfeng to strike a deal.
Top 5 lithium pure play producers with the biggest expansion plans
Ganfeng Lithium [SHE:002460] [HK: 1772] (OTC:GNENF) - Price = CNY 128.63
Ganfeng Lithium plan to expand their lithium carbonate equivalent ("LCE") production from 54,312 tpa in 2020 to 200,000 tpa in 2025, or a roughly 4x increase, and then to 600,000 tpa by about 2030 (long term target). Wow!
Ganfeng has been the most active buyer of global lithium assets the past 5 years, so certainly has the assets to be able to meet this incredible expansion plan.
Some of their largest deals included accumulating 50% of the Mt Marion Lithium Project (JV with Mineral Resources), 51% of Lithium Americas [TSX:LAC] (LAC) Cauchari-Olaroz Lithium Project, 100% acquisition of Bacanora Lithium who own the Sonora Lithium Project, 100% acquisition of International Lithium Corp.'s [TSXV:ILC] (ILHMF) Mariana Project, and 35% of Arena Minerals' [TSXV:AN] (OTCPK:AMRZF) Sal de la Puna Project.
Looking ahead to Ganfeng's expansion plans for this decade they are truly incredible and unparalleled.
On June 11 Mining.com reported:
The Chinese company in March announced an ambitious plan to increase its lithium production capacity roughly fivefold to 600,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent a year.
On September 18, 2021 Breakinglatest.news reported:
Ganfeng Lithium: The company plans to form a lithium product supply capacity with a total annual output of not less than 200,000 tons of LCE by 2025]. Ganfeng Lithium (002460.SZ) stated on the investor interactive platform on September 18, The company plans to form a lithium product supply capacity with a total annual output of not less than 200,000 tons of LCE by 2025, which will include lithium extraction from ore, lithium extraction from brine, and lithium extraction from clay. In the future, it will form a lithium product supply capacity of no less than 600,000 tons of LCE, and a more competitive lithium resource project reserve that matches it. (Daily Economic News).
Ganfeng's current market cap is US$27.3b. Current consensus is a 'buy' with an analyst's consensus price target of CNY 215.10, representing 67% upside. I rate Ganfeng an accumulate.
