The physical movement of the tailings; the dust control measures, possibly "out of hours" operating regulations, these will become the prevailing concerns.
Perhaps they made an error with the wording of that license. It needs amending.
But who would they have licensed it to? As JLP would have Kabwe. If any further mining is to be done, wouldn't it be after JLP are done with their project?
"Rather than directly tackling the waste piles, the government has licensed further mining and reprocessing activities that pose additional health risks,”
So JLP regarded as compounders of the problem rather than alleviators.
Let's hope they're wrong.
"The experts" probably assume JLP are miners.
"The experts also sent a letter to Jubilee Metals, a South African company planning to reprocess metals at the former mine, and a letter to the South African government, seeking information about the human rights impacts of their business."
That doesn't sound positive in respect to JLP, as far as the UN are concerned.
100%. And if that happens to be a good reply, it better get some decent media coverage.
I think we are about to be tested as to our environmental creds - and the first part of the test may be the letter of response as to how we are going to manage to protect the public during operations and also make a positive difference and reduce toxicity long term. That will include a look at moving the tailings, reprocessing steps, waste management, land remediation.
It is easy to say you are green and reduce pollution and harm from the tailings. Probably harder to do.. I am not saying that Jubs is not doing that, just that the premise is getting a little test, maybe with a pretty deep dive.
Exactly JLP is the solution.. but whoever writing these articles are not stating that, they making it seem JLP is just another mining company. We need some positive press.
OHCHR stance seems adversarial towards both government and Jubilee. This is understandable at this stage. However, I hope this organisation is not full of left wing ideologues with a "profit = evil" mindset. My understanding is that Jubilee are part of the solution and it is possible to both do good and make a profit. The alternative is to leave the dump just sit there.
Fully agree Jonah, JLP part of the solution not the problem.
UN letters were dated 27th May and asked for responses within 60 days - that deadline has passed so expect publication of any responses from the three parties any time. Responses will be published on OHCHR website at https://spcommreports.ohchr.org/TmSearch/Results

I think most are under the impression that Jubilee is a miner.
A positive statement from JLP on plans would do the world of good?
Good find, welloil. Nice to see a concerted effort from different agencies to get some action. I don't think the reference to Jubilee was all that complimentary: all the more reason to get going on the zinc circuit in H2 2021 as stated in several RNSs and interviews etc. I don't think it is putting it too strongly to claim that the reputation and credibility of the company in Zambia is at stake.
Looks like the Kabwe environmental lobby is gaining a bit of traction. JLP gets a mention too.
