Blimey, there are plenty of us Suffolk folk on here. You not wrong builder Pete, Suffolk is slower paced and are happy without too much tech. But maybe hydro tractors could be a winner.

What Tesla announced yesterday was significant in terms of future revenue growth, it's going to be insane. Lowering the costs of batteries is massive. Elon's delivery was terrible, though. :D

I know the battery technology is changing fast and I hope Uk firm Ilika beats Musks it certainly looks that way at the moment.

eventually sadly Cobalt single use with oil so thats not possible so. Was expecting him to mention supercaps and I see some have taken a knock today on that, not looked a Ilika though.

BHP have some interesting charts on their website showing how goldfields exploration finds have dramatically declined since 2002, the same is happening with copper finds

I knew about cobalt and molybdenum use to desulpher crude oil but was trying to show why FCEV vehicles are the only answer from the 2030s.
If cobalt continues to be used in all types of technology then depletion will happen faster and new forms of de-sulphurisation will be needed.
Cobalt and molybdenum are mainly found in chalcopyrites one of the main copper and nickel bearing ores and not normally found on their own.
Some good stuff on Ilika web site about their solid state batteries.
Elon Musk is aiming to use Lithium iron oxides as cathodes but they're less dense and less miles per charge than Li Cobalt oxides.
Cobalt free batteries have to come.
Musk can use space X to mine the moon and Mars we'll be fine. GEt to within our limits find new areas to extract and deplete. Hydrogen is a pretty much unlimited resource. and could be argues fairly circular in a fuel cell.

We monkeys are pretty good at finding more and more stuff and eking it out pretty well. I'd not bet on that stopping Tesla.

The world running out of various resources such as cobalt is an interesting subject of debate. It a bit counter intuitive and to date has not proved correct as other factor comes into play. Try this

Bamps, are you talking about fuel cell electric vehicles or just electric vehicles bevs, they both have batteries in, albeit much smaller in the fcev.
Of course the biggest consumer of cobalt is the oil industry to remove sulphur. But have they been under investigation Hmm.....

Metal availability is the key here to any plan.
We've been told not to drive diesel vehicles and diesel catalytic converters use Platinum.
Switching to petrol is a problem, the metal used is Palladium in the converters, car manufacturers have a problem sourcing it. It will lead to its demise anyway by 2030.
There is a presentation this month by Elon Musk on his new battery design to reduce the 30% cobalt use down to 0%.
Experts are saying that this is unachievable 2-5% is probably all he will get it down to because of the fire risks without Cobalt.
EM has taken a stake in Glencore's mine in the Congo , so that shows he needs Cobalt.
From 2022 Cobalt demand will far outstrip supply at 30% in batteries and maybe even 2%.
With 5G technology demand increasing that too will drain resources.
Apple and Google etc are being investigated for using child labour to mine the Cobalt in the Congo.
The Congo has over 60% of the worlds resources, over 200k t per annum and the
rest under 50k.
To meet demand there will need to be found 8 new mines the size of Glencore's mine in the Congo immediately , but there is no sign of that happening.
Electric cars will eventually have had their day unless new technology in the battery make up is found , probably by 2030.
Hydrogen really seems to be the natural alternative.

Tesla have managed to say that in 3/4 years they should be able to produce a cheaper vehicle.
The problems with battery weight / power / price availability of raw materials don’t seem to be going away anytime soon.
Toneman this is how Elon Musk got Tesla to where it is today. His plan was simple and he was 100% focused on implementing it. Clear end point, calculate what has to be done to get there and make it happen. Our Govt will be prioritising distractions like impact on grouse shooting while Germany just gets on with it.
Yeah, I think I agree taskmaster. I have been recently coming round to accepting that there's nothing wrong with BEV if you have some combination of driveway parking (charging), home solar, short trips, or happy to wait 30-45 mins for top-up. I think even I could manage with a Model S as their charging network appears so good. The advantage of plenty of happy BEV drivers/vehicles in the mix is they are undoubtedly a more efficient use of power (we shouldn't really be wasting it right?). As long as we do get FCEV for unhappy, forced-to-be-BEV, drivers to switch to would be a reasonable state of affairs.
It only changes my numbers by a small margin though, and I didn't even include electricity/hydrogen production for existing industrial demand in my original estimates.

tm fine with H2 doing all the heavy lifting but the little bev sparking battery toy will be stamped out like cookie cutters soon its all thats needed for those short trips to tesco, just needs the right price tag .
Not a son of Suffolk BP but hope to become an in-law at some point. Pretty pricey on the coast though! Obviously oil will remain a key ingredient but demand will wane for sure. Hand in hand with that will be a reduction in prospecting as oil becomes the new coal. Certainly as far as transport is concerned anyway. TM , not long ago they used to poo poo wind power etc. , thank god for that as I made a small fortune out of Vestas. How things move on eh?
