"Covid- a very convenient distraction from the nefarious actions of western governments." Maybe you're not from the U.K.
but don't you mean ALL industrialised or richer nations? Do they not all take advantage of the third world when it suits them? What ones are blame free to any degree?
Covid- a very convenient distraction from the nefarious actions of western governments.
Some thing I said from day one. RTA kill about 2+ million people per year around the world, child starvation (preventable) kills a child every 10 secs of every minute, of every hour of every day!!
And we are worried about a flu that is putting old and unhealthy people in the firing line.... save the kids, let the old go to a better place (if that is what they believe)
BB. That is a very valid point, I'm not aware of any studies that have shown the increase in cancer deaths, and those you mentioned etc etc due to lack of capacity. All these things are interrelated. Getting a true perspective on them is difficult. Many of the things you rightly mention are recurring third world issues, unlike those, Covid has effected the first world, so gets more attention.
.... and another very significant error is being made. Many months ago the effect of the virus on hospitalizations and deaths etc should have started to be compared to existing virus diseases and other causes of severe illness. As far back as early summer perhaps, comparisons to keep in perspective the impact of the disease should have been a key WHO brief. We would now be accepting covid as just another pain in the arse and returned our attention back to more deadly continuing problems elsewhere in the world. The unintended consequences of the intense focus and mad desire to try and control the spread of a virus are far reaching. Turning attention away from malnutrition, malaria, starvation, water supply, sanitation may have killed far more people overall than covid itself.
jtom, any barrier will restrict the trajectory of a missile that has momentum. That is not the main issue with masks. It is the accumulation of the virus on the mask which is the problem. If you are a carrier, and you are expressing a high virus count then you are filling up the mask with a high concentration of virus. To catch the disease you have to absorb enough virus to cross an infection level. Most people can handle low counts. You are forever being bombarded with cold and flu but only when you absorb enough virus over a threshold does it take over and replicate faster than being eradicated in the body usually resulting in symptoms as the body fights it.
So super spreaders have face masks saturated with very high levels. They touch the mask. Touch a surface. Somebody else comes along, touches the surface, their face and they are very easily infected. In fact, people with symptoms who should be isolating have a false sense of security and believe they can move around in public protecting other people by wearing a mask. It is in fact the exact opposite. If masks worked, they would have been mandatory for decades to stop the spread of killer flu! Catch it, kill it, bin it. Not keep wearing it for hours on end!!!
This is all well known. The mask wearing became a thing because it was an anti-Trump symbol and unfortunately the WHO used it as a retaliation policy against Trump who criticized their early response to the pandemic. It was actually a political gesture to begin with and it was rapidly adopted by news media after that as a simple tool to bash politicians with because the immediate logic of them being a barrier seemed so easy. But the wider issue of them as super spreaders has now been shown all over the world but media has its back to the wall with it. They can't start changing the advice they were very instrumental in pushing. The mask should have faded away and this is why I am truly gobsmacked that they have been allowed back on the agenda. This is monumental error that will result in major widespread lockdowns being reimposed unless the policy is dumped and FAST.
JTan. I completely agree with you. Now take that time to infect component, reduce it by 90% increase transmission by 200% also and translate it across the population. Even at a 0.1% death rate, it's a horrific number. To me it's simple (but everybody is different) Current death rates are over 1000 a week, if me wearing a mask reduces that by one person, and keeps somebodies granny or grandad alive I'm happy. I totally accept that it's far from perfect, I never said or inferred that it was I hope.
DYOR. Good luck to all.
Pfizer CEO has just said that vaccines will be necessary for years to come.... Oh so they are planning on it to last years? Got it!
Sar-Cov was on fire in Asia, then just like that, fizzled out, only to emerge 17-18 years later.
Jtom, I’ve got absolutely no need to be “educated” thanks.
This virus needs to be allowed to go endemic. If you are vulnerable, stay at home out the way til it is. I’m meeting my legal requirements. That’s where my responsibilities end. I’ve got absolutely no skin in the game in stopping spread. It’s a pointless, economically cratering activity that is completely the wrong approach. The more spread we have amongst healthy people the better
Don't listen to anyone selling you the cure.
Whatever about people not washing their hands in any toilet never mind a public toilet, this is disgusting never mind extremely unhygienic, the mask wearing racket is a joke. There are more microbes on and inside most masks than on most floors! Most people don't wash them regularly including myself.
9 year old children upwards in Ireland now have to wear them in school or remain at home.... Secondary s hool students and tea hers gave been wearing them for nearly a year and a half at this stage and yet Ireland has one of the highest rates of incidence in Europe... About 4 to 5,000 cases per day for a population of just over 5 million people.... and this despite the fact that 93% of the population has been doubly vaccinated....
Methinks that these pharma companies are milking this pandemic.... That's my own genuine feeling on the matter.
So strange, really dont know why this SP is so low... planes are flying and people are traveling. There is a myth about a variant that is evading vaccination? It seems to be nowhere near as severe as Delta and actually has the potential to wipe out the Delta variant! SP is lower than November 2020?! Mind is blown....
Smithy, so what's your point? People harm others with knives, should all knives be banned? Education is key. Come up with a workable responsible alternative. (I change or wash and microwave mine daily, no big ask). Studies have been conducted in real life conditions, wind direction, obstacles etc all make a difference that's true, but underlying transmission is reduced. Not completely due to many factors, but it is reduced. How do the public decide for themselves? Luckily I don't any longer have to use The Underground.
DYOR. Good luck to all.
Its -2 here go outside see how far your breath goes outdoors. Indoors you are breathing on everyone and them you. Droplets are not your problem. Also 2m is a limit agreed by the govt to maintain businesses. The WHO advised 1m its all about guidance and managing behaviour. This idea you're safe over 2m is not true. Droplets aren't spreading covid. That's why the numbers never change in any country worldwide.
I can smell people's vape 50 yards down the road.
If I can smell a fart almost instantly as it makes it's way round a pub how far do you think your breath is going. Lol
You just popped in then jotom... 1st look at bb?
I’ve been wearing the same mask for months. It’s been on the same restaurant tables as anyone else and I touch it to put it on and take it off.
I’m legally obliged to wear it, not wash it, nor stop transfer in public spaces.
This is the primary reason the whole thing is a load of @rse. The studies on reduction of particulates are absolutely correct - in a lab. That isn’t the real world.
PS. I must say thank you to all posters here, unlike other boards, posters seem respectful and on topic. Happily as I write both my major holdings (NWG and IAG) are in the green. I'm off to have a cuppa to celebrate! (Before they change).
DYOR. Good luck to all.
BB. Having worked on germ transfer via clothing (germs can live for as long as a couple of weeks when kept damp) I do understand and agree that after use, masks have to be disposed of respectfully. That there has been no education in this respect is lamentable and typical of a government underplaying the dangers. I've been trying to get the clothing industry to face up to the infections they must be causing for over ten years, (just consider returned lingerie and swimwear!) they and successive governments just don't care enough to upset the applecart. Regarding masks, to do nothing sprays everyone within a 2M radius. A mask in my opinion just reduces the transfer a bit. Yes it may also lead to a false sense of security, people should still hand sanitize. But what are the alternatives that the public will understand/adhere to? I don't see many.
DYOR. Good luck to all.
This is just pure conjecture, masks are not protecting others around you. The virus is taken in through eyes and ears amongst other things. This is just guess work that it protects you. The idea that were all spitting on each other is just pure spin to pressure people into wearing a mask. The image of face masks is a psychological reminder to keep people in a state of alertness, no masks = end of pandemic. Govts don't want that to be our mindset yet. They're now a political tool as well, despite all this Scotland and Wales experiencing the same levels as England with no marked reduction from their use or introduction. Masks do nothing! The WHO told people for 40 years. It miraculously changed in 2020
If everyone just washed their hands more often, especially after a toilet visit, sneezed into your elbow or tissue, coughed away from others, simple good manners, a lot of this could be avoided, but we live in a society that is selfish and rude, so here we are.
The amount of people that I see still visiting public toilets and not wash their hands is mind boggling.
There seems to be much confusion here regarding the use of face masks. They are not seen as needing to be a hermetic seal, but are used to help reduce droplet "spray" (my word) to those around us, it's simple common politeness. It's not a 100% protection obviously. In any case, is it a big price to pay if it saves the life of one person a day? I don't think so. Why do others? https://www.babylonhealth.com/us/blog/health/face-coverings-explained
IAG is in the green as I write.

DYOR. Good luck to all.
How effective is a mask you touch every 2 minutes lol.
A drug developed by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKlein (GSK.L) has been authorised by UK regulators in a move that could prove key in the treatment of the Omicron variant.
The makers say Xevudy (sotrovimab) works against the recently discovered mutation of COVID-19 and was found to cut hospital admission and death by 79%.
The drug is a monoclonal antibody and was cleared for use by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
GSK said it “retains activity against key mutations of the new Omicron Sars-CoV-2
big-blue, yes they do, most of EU state only FFPE2 masks be worn, but how effective are they? unless sealed , not very.
Kids have started to wear masks again at school here too.
jotom, the reason it is so important is the sequence of events seen repeatedly all over the world and a sequence that is then repeated post lockdown. Mask wearing imposed, cases rapidly rise blamed on superspreaders, lockdown follows. Cases drop, lockdown and masks removed. Variant comes along, knee jerk response is to force the masks again. Rinse and repeat and lockdown then follows again. The pattern is well established. As long as only one effect of the masks is referenced and the more important part about the masks being the superspreaders, as warned right at the beginning, is deliberately removed from open discussion then a return to lockdown will follow. It is used as a comfort blanket and it is used as a propaganda tool and it is used as a nudge theory compliance manipulator. Unfortunately it is also a potent source of concentrated viruses that are well over the threshold for infecting other people and a virus that can survive for hours outside the body on surfaces.
Of course I understand long term investing, but what I do lol at is people buying into a share or sector that is under heavy pressure from something it has no control over. All you're doing is gambling and trying to catch a falling knife (unsuccessfully too by the sound of it).
Trend is your friend and quite frankly in no way whatsoever can you can this trend is near reversing yet.
Also, you say people don't have the time for analysis or looking at info, so just buy and wait. Well then why is this board filled with comments all day long saying, "near the bottom now, just topped up, cheap as chips, not a loss until you sell, just averaged down" etc. etc. If people put a bit more thought into what they were buying or invested in and took a loss when it was small they probably wouldn't have to keep using up their "dry powder" would they.
