My first buy here was at 1.76p and I’ve had 5 more significant top ups since. Started on a recommendation by my son a year past February and intended to top slice at 10p for a free ride and handy profit. That strategy is now out of the window. Getting into GGP was intended as a pure punt and I’m now in it for the journey. If it goes to pot it will be sad but won’t affect our way of life and if it comes good, as I’m very confident it will, my four adult kids will be the beneficiaries.
Regarding the short selling. I maybe wrong but my understanding is if a sell order I placed, say for a pound the broker would then know your out price and have more confidence they can lend those shares to short and replace them knowing you will be holding long term. The only way was to stop it was with the certificate.
Ah I see!! Thank you RedJordy :-)
Panama, the price of the sell order is irrelevant, it can be £10 p/s if you wish, it’s the principle that your shares are on order to sell which stops the MM’s from ‘loaning’ them out, not the price. Hope this clears things up :)
Thank you Schlemiel. I am considering after Frdiays, chat and now todays, doing this at £1. I have been wary of placing any limit sells for lots of reasons, and in any event my thoughts on any 'sell' have changed dramatically over time, from under 2p buys all the way to over 8p buys. I had thought I would top slice as a precaution at 8p and then it became 10p and now I'm lost as this company seems to have such great potential still with all of it land in a hig strike region.
It can all be overwhelming when trying still to keep an eye on caution. In my case at least, though modestly invested I guess compared to many, it is a very important decision to make!
Best Wishes, Panama
Most nominee stocks are held at Computershare UK and another company but I can't recall who they are
If you're gonna place a sell limit order then be careful. Paddy is correct. Place a price way above the current market price to prevent accidentally selling the stock on a price spike
Yes paddy had done alot of research and so far he has been spot on. If he says £1 i would say yes and i have said that this share can be that dream share where its gone from pennys to a pound.
Q:What can you do to prevent your shares holdings from being shorted?
A: Now what can the average personal investor do to stop their own shares being shorted, as believe me your own broker, if approached, WILL sell your own shares that they hold on your behalf as a nominee account.
There are two things you can do, the first is to certificate them but this is not obviously to everyone’s advantage but the alternative solution is simple. All you do is to phone your broker and put an order in saying that you wish to place your shares for sale at, for arguments sake, double today’s price. As they are ‘on order’ they cannot be lent out by your broker and in turn you are reducing the amount of ‘free shares’ out there that can be used for shorting purposes. And don’t forget to move your limit order up when the price starts to recover, then, that way your shares can’t be shorted – not much but helps :D.
Although an individual personal investor will not normally have enough shares to halt a concerted shorting attack, if a large number of holders did this it would reduce the overall amount of shares that they could get their hands on.
In my opinion well worth doing if not only for the knowledge that your own shares cannot and will not be used in a short attack against the very share that you own.

Red Jordy, this is very interesting and following on from Paddy saying he had set a limit to sell at £1 for his stock I am wondering whether I should do the same as suggested here? Is that fact? I only ask as I truly don't understand how it works and think if it is so, then I should set the limit now (then rue the day I did it when the share lifts off to multiples of £1!!!)
Not that it applies to GGP so much, as you’d have to be mad to be short here, but when you short a stock you’re effectively selling stock you don’t have to then buy back at a lower price. If you have a sell order set (recommend at a ridiculously high price if you do not plan on selling, like i have here) then the MM’s cannot ‘loan’ your shares to anyone attempting to short. I always recommend setting a high sell order on anything your long on to prevent this. What a great week though! Can’t wait for the next set of interim results, if the previous ones are anything to go by the share price should start building next week in anticipation. GLA, have a great weekend.
To Paddy and the learned members -
Can the brokers loan our shares to short them( which is really bad) . I am curious how does this work ?
How can brokers Loan them ?
i bought the first apartment in 2002,then another one in 2004,golden sun homes agency, bank intrest was enough to pay for flights and spends every year.sold both about 2013,never been back.would love to visit again.
Hi MFU, yes Saints were very good in those days. An enjoyable experience for you no doubt. My own style of coaching? Well it depended what age they were but for the teenagers I remember explaining the importance of 'tracking back' once. "Imagine your whole family is going to be carted off in an big old wheelbarrow, never to be seen again, unless you make the effort to chase back when the ball is lost. THAT'S how important it is!!" They seemed to dig those kinds of quips.
Anyway, back to this wonderful share. It's a particularly lovely day today and I believe things come in threes: I won £24 on my monthly £10 bookmaker (self-imposed allowance on Thursday night to stop me gambling haha!), gained around £20k by the end of Friday on GGP and have to fix re-felt shed roof today. Hmm, well two out of three isn't bad eh?

Zoroz , your link must apply to an overseas market, certainly not Uk.
Stock held in a broker or custodian Nominee can be loaned out if it is in the custody agreement. Stock can never be sold without shareholder permission unless it is held under a separate Broker Discretionary agreement and in a different Nominee name. Basically if sold and price then rockets there is no comeback on the broker.
Erratum : 'without going to market'
C19 - That's great insight fella. Those subtle indicators reveal so much, as you say, the market will take a hefty line of stock with going to market just below bid, it's very bullish indeed
thanks
