" Zelensky miscalculated Putin's resolve"
Dont be ridiculous ....he knows full well the power and resolve of Russia ...he knows what happened to Aleppo, Homs etc ...
he stands up to International Law ...do you?
JohnNth
Crimea doesn't belong to Russia so why should they give it back ? ....In the 1954 Transfer it became part of Ukraine and just because Putin falsely says that was unconstitutional doesn't make it so... It was only Catherine the Great that put Crimea in anything like Russian hands before that it had nothing to do it with..they took it from the Ottomans in a war ...suprise, suprise
Russia has no claim on these territories ...despite not liking how they were formed during periods in the past
Crimea has had a sought of self autonomy ..it is all about the naval base at Sevastopol and its strategic location which Putin wants no matter what
I am sure Spain doesn't like the old treaty that gives Gibraltar to the UK ...but..are we to rip all that up and say it has no baring any more ?
Ukraine received independence in the same way as the other nations that broke from the Soviet Union...they voted on it and didnt need anyone else in other areas of the Soviet Union to take part ....they decided for themselves ..something Putin doesn't want to allow ..as I am sure they dont in Belarus
Annexing the Donbas is totally illegal ..end of...
Catalans want to break away from Spain but the Constitution of Spain says everyone in Spain has to vote on it...not just the Catalans...that is the Constitution there ..like it or not .... and they continue to sort out their differences ....
Pokerchips...you are wrong. Zelensky made it clear to Putin and Russia Ukraine will not concede an inch of it's territory and that included Crimea. This was a non starter for Putin who had vowed on taking power 20 years ago that he will reunite Crimea back with Russia. There were other issues as well. Zelensky miscalculated Putin's resolve, misread military assistance he was promised by US (Zelensky thought NATO would intervene physically) and misread intelligence immediately prior to invasion. Zelensky could have tried harder when Lavrov reached out to Ukraine for 'serious' talks literally few days before invasion but Zelensky did not like what Russia was looking for and ignored request. Zelensky fkd up BIG time!
Totally agree JohnNth
I feel that if the gave up the Donetsk region, or at least agree to a referendum (possibility of cheating and corruption aside), there would be a lot less lives lost!!!
Piutin cannot last forever and despite what folk think and appears to the case, there are those in Russia that don't want Putin, just that that is not apparent as there is a news blackout of Russian news, moreover, the UK and US want to show support for Zolensky and pushing him further in to the war zone any constantly supplying arms, which i am sure they are getting paid for.
Look at the recent talks that the G7 were at and the jibes coming from Johnson about having sleeves rolled up or being bare chested, whats that for except provocation to such an agreer as Putin.
Some say you cannot keep what was never yours in the first instance!!!!
POWER
Mabe you need to go back a few steps and review the meetings back in Jan and Feb - Putin lost his patience and thought "fu*ck it" I have had enough of this , they either do what I say or else
https://www.politico.eu/article/stoltenberg-johnson-russia-ukraine-nato-invasion-moscow-putin/
JohnNth,
Couldn't agree with you more. Wanted to say more but am afraid being labelled as Pro-Russian or extremist. Putin was forced into a " pre mediated" conflict" which could have avoided.
i don't disagree that there are loads of examples and reasons for land, territoiry changes. my god governments have seperated huge swathes of land and countries over the centuries. its just i dont think that easy when in a war to decide, agree we will simply slice off a piece of land and thats fine. its like the comments read that macron thinks urkraine should do this but ask him to slice off a bit of france that no doubt belonged to others many years ago he'd say no. everyone always knows best for everyone else
JohnNth,
Putin and his cronies are all part of the political power that promotes and allows all the organised crime ....something they wish to spread out further within the realms of Africa, areas of the Middle East and indeed controlled parts of Ukraine....including port areas
JohnNth
you need to review the history of Organised crime in Ukraine from the 1990´s and look at its origins from within Russian backed enterprises and how the fact that Zelensky and a move towards a more controlled EU membership is seen as a threat to that organised crime....and how having territory in Crimea and the Donbas is seen as a way of maintaining that Organised crime away from those who wish to see it eliminated
I love how people simply trade parts of countries as though it’s easy now and simply just handover! It’s been going on of course since time began but simply saying should just have given this piece or done that. Like saying Wales now belongs to Italy because the romans once came etc. it’s just really hard and as we will probably appreciate russia wants, like commodities, physical assets that will drive the next global stage. Not sure yet literally how far, how much of these commodities will putin want to get from urkraine
Equanimity...you sound like Zelensky Mk 2. Each morning, Zelensky wakes up and says we're going to win this war and ends the day losing more territory. However, I do agree with your FXPO assessment. The company has great future, especially now that Ukraine is on a path to EU membership. And the Russkies are not interested in Poltava region either so mines are safe. Although, FXPO's traditional route for seabourne trade through the port of Yuzhny using Dniper river which flows through Kherson region and which Russia now controls could be an issue.
Pokerchips...you're missing the point. Russia is the aggressor in the conflict but Ukraine had plenty of opportunities to stop this aggression. Russian demands were not unreasonable and Ukraine will have had to give up Crimea cos they didn't own it until recently and they didn't pay anything for it to gain ownership. Russia wanted it back..full stop. Like I said, if Zelensky could set the clock back, he would agree to all of Russia's 'initial' demands, but now he couldn't given the levels of deaths, destruction and displacement. Zelensky misread, misunderstood and mis-managed the whole situation and now finds himself in a very difficult position. He is in a casino having gambled and lost so much and is now trying to win it all back using Ordinary Ukranians as pokerchips. He feels it is his only choice. Before conflict started, he would have negotiated with Russia with one hand tied behind his back. When the fighting stops, he will be negotiating with both his hands tied back and a bullet pointing to his head. Zelensky is finished, and he knows it. Unfortunately, still many more thousands of Ukranians will pay for his gamble with their lives. He should listen to the EU and not warmongers like US and UK which have a history of waging illegal wars and have an ulterior motive (weaken Russia/China axis; weaken EU by loading it up with Ukraine totally destroyed; in US politicians pressured by lobiies representing arms industry to inflame the conflict etc etc) in wanting Ukraine to fight on when there's no hope whatsoever.
equanimity I agree in the sense it needs to be held til end of year and poltava will be safe and it will have the bestgrowth out there when war finishes.... do ukraine have 2-3 times resources of russia though....? i dont think so, or I havnt seen evidence of even having an equal fight let alone over power russia
https://www.mining.com/web/column-iron-ore-needs-china-stimulus-action-not-just-words/
apologies.....I should say KYIV
Equanimity
Yes, when Hungary joined the EU in 2004 you could buy a central Budapest apartment for 4-6m HUF ..by 2019 that would cost you 70-80m HUF depending on location
Maybe buy a KIEV apartment for the grandchildren !!
Pokerchips. I am not saying people can be changed overnight. What I am saying is that EU candidacy will be good for Ukrainian stocks and make them more expensive (higher P/E mults). An effort in the right direction and adherence to the law is enough.
snudge1234, I am sorry, but I do not have time explaining why Ukraine will win this war. It would require discussing a lot of basics. Neither do I want to get entangled in pointless arguments with ideologically biased people here. I propose to simply wait until September, and see what happens. Even if Ukraine could not win, FXPO would be fine, as Russia has zero resources for moving into Poltava. It took Russians 80 days to advance 15 kilometres and take a tiny city of Severodonetsk, while Western weapons have not yet arrived, and HIMARS were not yet engaged in long-distance shootings of Russian military headquarters and warehouses.
As a small hint. In August 1943, German troops controlled a lot of territory. Yet, after the Battle of Kursk, it was clear the German Reich was finished. Simply because the Allies combined could deploy 2-3 times more resources.
@Pokerchips - best advice I can give is place JohnNth on the ignore list....he clearly has an agenda and a disruptive motive for his propaganda
JohnNth
we can see that you would clearly have given into Hitler once the Nazis had moved into France and the Netherlands...and then what ?
I think it's gone red lately more because commodity prices are down as the market is expecting recessions and therefore less manufacturing.
Regs Zalenski, I'm not sure how people are blaming him or Ukraine in general for being invaded by Russia.
What I will point out is that Russian troops have been causing mass destruction in the areas they have captured and I would not think their troops will do well trying to hold or even live in such areas during the Winter months so I would think the idea, as with Russia themselves against France and German invasion is to hang on till Winter and let the weather do the work.
Snudge1234...you're bang on; Zelensky has this pipe dream that with more weapons from NATO countries, he is going to push back the Russkis (before the onset of winter) to it's borders, which will strengthen it's negotiating hand and then have peace talks. As I've said many times before, Zelensky has fkd up big time right from the outset and he is gambling again with lives and livelihoods of ordinary Ukranians. Russia has won this war on all fronts; hot war, economic war, and psychological war (things like Putin has cancer in his balls, Russia have lost 60k soldiers etc etc) have not worked either. Thinking from FXPO angle 'only', the sooner Ukraine accepts it has lost the war and engages Russia at peace talks the better. Press reports indicates this position will be arrived at about end August.
" why has this gone red everyday since eu candidate."
well the concerns that their biggest European customer could lose all its essential Russian gas and go into industrial economic depression this winter could be one reason....along with the fact that iron ore prices have been falling on recession fears which all is hitting the sentiment regarding demand
" Becoming part of the European family is a dream of many Ukrainians."
Equanimity
of course ...they see the handouts that the Eu provides.....look at Poland and Hungary....they have had massive handouts and now they ...dont like this, they done like that..they want to change this, they want to change that..wont accept this..refuse to accept that
I saw first hand in Hungary what happened to large EU funds that were destined for EU funded projects and how they "disappeared" .
Last year Zelensky tried to change tax rules which meant that every small business had to have a cash registrar and record every transaction for tax purposes ...there were demonstrations in the street ...
please...dont be naive about who they think will provide the economic prosperity ( outside of the war issue ) and how they will dislike following all the rules just like anyone else.....
Completely agree Snudge...want this stock to do amazingly well. Will be a fantastic structural play over the next decade if it can start to operate normally again. However...that isn't on the cards anytime soon unfortunately....as you say, Ukraine is losing territory by the day and Russia have been surprisingly strong in being able to handle sanctions and just keep putting in more poor men. Attritional warfare suits the Russians...as it has done for centuries time and time again.
I think in the West we underestimate the tenacity of the Russian psyche....brutal.
Anyway...far as Ferrexpo is concerned there are two main issues. Obviously firstly it is logistics...and this isn't showing any great signs of improving. Only chance for them is another port but barge/rail is being more and more affected, and they aren't going to be using their original port anytime soon...dream on if you think that will happen. Secondly and more severely is the prospect Putin decides to push further into the country...he may well do it the way things are right now.
