Ah - I can now see my reply to you. Guess I am typing too fast!
I just posted a reply to your last message and it instantly disappeared - maybe your conspiracy theory is right on missing links :)
I will wait a few mins to see if it turns up and write again if not.
MadP - I could never understand why they didn't close, or more strictly control wet markets after SARS. I know it's something many have pushed for even before the latest outbreak. About 15 years ago I was staying in a hotel in Yunnan province. It was the "best hotel in town" and maybe similar to a 3 star property. It was courtyard shaped and I woke early in the morning, went out onto the balcony and saw them skinning a horse in the courtyard below. I skipped breakfast that day!
I think China's use of chequebook diplomacy might well and truly backfire on them now. Huge parts of Asia and Africa are are almost wholly dependant on aid from China. Now those places will expect China to step up to the plate or you can expect a lot of land and business reclamation as the world starts to hold China to account for its failings.
BTW are you on night shift are are you over in this part of the world?
Looed - IMHO It's looking more likely that the virus came from an accidental exposure at the lab in Wuhan. The Sky News video points to bats not being sold or eaten in Wuhan and this might be a smokescreen from the Chinese Government. Blame the wet-markets and then close them down, to show that the government is acting responsibly. The big problem was denying the virus was spreading from person to person as warned by Taiwan. I can see the world taking the PRC to court for damages and possible sanctions if they won't pay.
I had a curry at a hotel buffer in the Seychelles back in the early eighties and found some very small bones. I thought it was beef up until that point, but found out it was a Flying Fox, a Fruit Bat. They don't eat them most places now, as they are protected. Even if they were abundant I wouldn't want it again, as there were too many bones.
MadP - I wouldn't read too much into the broken links. I think that's quite a common thing. Its certainly happened to me a few times. I am not on twitter but very often if I click on a link to twitter its already gone. I know the data servers are re-jigging bandwidth etc so maybe dropped links are related to that. I think the fact the reports are still available means no dark motive. Maybe we can check these new links in a few days and see if they are still available.
MadP - I had heard that "lab near wet-market" theory before. I think it is just the one person making the claim but am sure others have run with it. I can believe bats where sold at the market as the Chinese are known for eating all manner of wildlife for supposed health benefits. A quick look at Wikipedia shows many countries eat bats which was news to me. The article does end by saying the labs found bat and other viruses. Its possible these are research labs focusing on identifying virus for legitimate reasons given that SARS was a species jumper like CV. IMO if this was a "weapon grade" virus, the Central Govt would have acted a lot faster and more ruthlessly than they did. Most of the scientific world is focused on this and I haven't seen an uptick in authorities claiming this to be man-made, though once things settle and we can forensically study, the real origin can be revealed.
Looed - I'm updating the links, but don't you think it is strange for both links to no longer work? The Sky News video is a new one on the same subject.
MadP - I replied you on 2nd April - let me know if you want me to post again. Or are you just updating the links ?
Evidence mounts COVID-19 came from a lab in Wuhan.

Has China defeated the coronavirus? Is Beijing reporting the right numbers? China says it has the coronavirus outbreak under control. But several reports tell a different tale. In Wuhan, clashes broke out after the restrictions were lifted.

Hi MadP - I couldn't open the first link but I did find a file on Youtube so assume its the same one - talks about there research team who investigated bats and who are now missing / silenced / dead - is that the one? It took about 6 weeks for the Chinese Govt to come clean and admit there was indeed a new virus. Dr Li (the whistleblower who died of CV) was widely praised by people in China and the police issued a rare apology for silencing him. Both of these actions are rare rebukes to the Central Party. It's not fair to blame ordinary Chinese people for withholding info. In the West, Govt / political parties etc are by the people and for the people. In China, people exist to serve the interests of the Party. The Party must be protected at all costs. China is governed by Central Party grand planning and this is interpreted at various levels of local government which is open to corruption and can be manipulated to suit the greater needs of the Party. When the CV was first taking hold, local authorities in Wuhan stopped testing. This wasn't to avoid treating patients - but for a far more important reason. By avoiding testing and admitting that patients exist, the Party is protected. They tried desperate attempts at containment, but they tried to do it from a political perspective rather than a medical one. In fact the Central Party took a very hands off approach as they prefer to bask in the Good News and leave the accountability and bad news to the local level. Once the virus spread and the economy started to be affected, the Party had to adopt more stringent matters - in part to protect its people but mostly to ensure the survival of the Party.
The second video - I have seen these clips before and the reporters claims are consistent with how these two issues have been reported here. As I said above, Grand Party plans are open to local interpretation if it serves the Party locally. Just because Central Party declares "Wuhan Open" doesn't mean other jurisdictions have to accept this until specifically told they must do so. Its hard to know the real reason for the skirmish. Yes, the neighbouring province might worry about reinfection from outsiders (about 90% of cases here in Taiwan are imported), there may be food shortages so they want to preserve stocks for themselves, their infection rates might be high so they want to avoid local transmission. I dont think there has been any official comment on what happened.
The urns - absolutely the feeling is the numbers given my China are not 100% accurate. It is also possible many people died through lack of medical care for other conditions as hospitals where death traps and totally overrun with CV cases. This happened during winter where temps drop to 2C and lack of medical care, food shortages etc must have resulted in more deaths.
As I am typing this I just got a bonkers statistic - Taiwan is one of only 6 countries in the world where schools are open. That is crazy.
