BUDGET airline fastjet says it wants to play a bigger role in reviving tourism in Matabeleland after launching a Harare-Bulawayo service on Friday.
BY TATIRA ZWINOIRA
The airline, which already has flights between Harare, Victoria Falls and Johannesburg, came in as a direct competitor to Air Zimbabwe, which had monopolised the route for many years.
Bulawayo has so much to offer tourists, business and all other sectors,” fastjet accountable manager Ed Berry told guests at a function to mark the inaugural flight at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo (JMN) International Airport.
“Fastjet will help you increase the tourism business in this town.
“Mobile phones in Africa have opened up communications across the whole continent so our airline fastjet is going to revolutionise aviation in Zimbabwe.”
Berry said fastjet was looking forward to servicing more domestic routes as it
Fastjet has more than 100 flights a week and we are managing 90% on time performances and we feel fastjet is for businessmen, tourism and for the general public in Bulawayo.
“Fastjet intends to grow further in Zimbabwe as we will be applying for more routes between Harare and Bulawayo.
“We want to start the second flight as soon as possible and move onto a third.”
Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe director of airports Tawanda Guzha said JMN International Airport needed for more flights and fastjet’s decision to add Bulawayo to its destinations was a major boost.
We have been pushing for more flights so that we have more usage of this facility, so it is with great pleasure that I stand here today to be able to welcome fastjet to this airport,” he said.
“For that effort to see the light of day, it is through the policies guided by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural development.”
ATCL for next three months will be flooding the domestic market with the 280 odd seater B787 on domestic routes, namely MWANZA JRO , whilst pilots gain take off / landing experience and training , we need to pull something out of the bag because the local market is very excited, quite rightly at the prospect of experiencing their national carriers spectacular offering. Next three months are going to be tough in TZ
The best low cost Airline in the region Fastjest just has their inaugural flight into Bulawayo. This is great for Bulawayo, this is great for the growth of the region.

Fastjet, anticipating the early registration of their ATR72’s in Tanzania without any further regulatory mischief and obstacles put in their way, have now put additional departures to Harare on their booking site, effective November this year.
The airline will then fly four times a week from Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam to Harare, with two of the flights routing via Lusaka / Zambia.
The additional flights will operate on Sunday and Wednesday, increasing the connectivity between the three cities.
Both Zambia and also Zimbabwe are up and coming tourism destinations with the latter making heavy inroads into the market again after years of stagnation and once the elections in Harare are held and a new elected government is in place are yet more changes expected to take place to spur new tourism developments and increase tourism marketing across Africa and the world.
Fjetcrazy, it is good to hear we are only paying retainers on the ATRs until we get the route licences, and that we haven't bought them outright. I believe FJET have said they will be operational In September so they must have trained crews ready and available and on the payroll?
I agree, however the kigoma was and is intended for E190 Jet, so no basis for having ATR Waiting , I believe a retainer is being paid until they are actually delivered, and I agree that ROUTES should be available before aircraft arrive, WHICH IS WHY THEY HAVE NOT BEEN DELIVERED YET
Fjetcrazy, I was querying the logic of getting any aircraft before getting route licences and Kigoma licence was not not issued first time and may not be issued by an authority that is protecting the route for the nationalised airline. We have three ATR ON THE BOOKS AND AS YET NO ROUTES APPROVED as far as I know. Asssts sitting around is never good practice.
If you look at November you will see 4 departure weekly that’s eight sectors , four out and four back
Clearly we are talking at cross purposes I refer to out and back as 1 and you call it 2 trips
Essentially we have only added 1 extra round trip DAR-HRE-DAR.
4 x weekly, 4 to HRE, two via LUN
on looking it would appear that it is still 2 x weekly DAR LUN HRE and one Wednesday DAR HRE only
Nico also said in that interview that he wants a jet operation for kigoma which implies there is no intention to use ATR on said route.
There are several changes to schedule including increase to 4 x weekly DAR LUN HRE, Mbeya is double daily five times weekly.
but it seems that they have reverted to 2 flights a day to Mbeya and 2 flights to Kili Daily after previously having this and changing to 1 x Mbeya and 3 x KilI Does anyone remember them telling anyone ?
Nico apparently said in an interview "A) The ATR’s are a key addition to our fleet as it allows for the operation of routes that are not suitable for jet aircraft. The aircraft will be deployed in Tanzania, we have just received approval on registration of the fleet, and presently engaging with the relevant regulatory bodies to acquire relevant route rights."
With Kigoma route licence denied by Tanzania authorities and bearing this in mind why do we invest in aircraft months before we apply for a route licence. Surely this is the wrong way round and hugely risky. Is there a plan B if these Tan domestic route licences are denied?
Who is Jerry Hass?
We're do you get your apparent insightful information from, FJetcrazy?
Are you an aviation worker in Tanzania?

Now that Harare-Bulawayo service is done. @fastjet will look into Bulawayo-Johannesburg , Harare-Maputo/Beira and Harare-Lusaka-Kinshasa Service in the next months. Airline will register one more aircraft in Zimbabwe.
It seems she did indeed do the Mbeya, 1 x Kili, 2 x mwanza and the Harare and Lusaka flight
Don't panic Mr Mainwaring!
She’s flying again, did not do the Mbeya, JRO then HRE, normal ops tomorrow
just when you think it can't get any worse.....sabotage I expect.
