The European Central Bank’s move to buy Italian and Spanish bonds to tame the region’s debt crisis marks a step toward the kind of fiscal union that Germany has opposed since the founding of the single currency. While investors and economists say tighter fiscal ties and increased transfers to the financially weak euro states will be needed to end the financial contagion, purchases of Italian and Spanish debt that Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc estimates may reach 850 billion euros ($1.2 trillion) threaten fresh political fault lines. “This huge-risk pooling exercise will not come easily and the risk of political fallout will be large,” Jacques Cailloux, chief European economist at RBS, wrote in a note. “This might be the necessary and painful step required to pave the way for the creation of a common debt instrument, the quid pro quo for this might be the loss of fiscal sovereignty.” The unwillingness of euro leaders to forge a U.S.-style federal fiscal union with the monetary union that now joins 17 states has been a handicap that has fueled economic imbalances in the region, analysts and investors including billionaire George Soros have said. Germany, the biggest euro economy, has long resisted such a set-up, saying it would discourage member states from enforcing budgetary rigor. “We don’t need a fiscal union and we should oppose it because that would mark a dissolution of responsibilities,” Michael Meister, the finance spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats, said in an interview today.
(Reuters) - Germany's Jens Weidmann and Juergen Stark led a four-man group who opposed the reactivation of the European Central Bank's bond-buying program, central bank sources said on Friday. Bundesbank chief Weidmann and Stark, who heads the ECB's economics department, are ECB heavyweights whose opposition to firing up the program after 18 weeks of inactivity could restrict any push to broaden purchases to include Italy's bonds. Traders said the ECB bought Irish and Portuguese government bonds after deciding on Thursday to revive the program. "If that is the ECB response, it's like the fire brigade responding but driving to the wrong place," said Holger Schmieding, economist at Berenberg Bank. "It doesn't douse the fire and harms the credibility of the fire brigade."

I quite agree last time he forgot to take the cap off in all his excitement . I was sure it was going to be an internet sensation ,we may have been able to take out a super-injunction !
thanks for the email but I dont think it would be appropriate to indulge in a threesome with mrs bruvvy. Especially if hallmark is operating the camcorder.
Sure going to be an interesting few weeks/months monsieur !
right you are sir
I will mail you in a minute ok -)
Assuming you are correct and the greeks and maybe one or two others collapse, together with the yanks problems, what do you see happening to gold miners? Gold must surely stay high, but will the shorting of the miners continue?
We are at a tipping point ,one little nudge and the markets could be in serious trouble ,depends how long the bull****ting politicians and govt economists want to keep pulling the wool over the publics eyes ,make sure you are protected squire ,coz it could be fast and vicious ! If i am wrong then nothing lost and the market is always there for a re-entry (bit like the missus! ) Trust your instincts and watch the Greeks defaulting (it will happen its just a question of when ?? ) The only safe place is the championship -)
Gawd knows. Not looking too clever though. How right you were to be cautious a month or so ago. BEM is ready to explode again though I reckon. Too much newsflow due there and I had a nice email from their boss recently.
