ST, while away some hours on https://nextstrain.org/
Ndn71,
I thought, should I reply to you or not? I can tell you one thing for sure, they didn't have to wipe their buts with newspapers to say the least; have you?
Picathartes,
Apologies, my memory failed me, the 1st recorded case was Nov 17 2019, in December was when the news broke out.
I first became interested in it when I read a Newsweek magazine in 2005, where they were speaking of China as the possible birth place of the next global pandemic..how visionary. If you can get hold of it you will see; I think the cover mention something about bird flu.
Disease X, Y, Z …

Even allowing for the fact that these guys are looking for help and funding, this is ‘scary’ stuff. Nipah, Ebola, H5N1 and H7N9, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever. Crikey!
In the scheme of things, is there a long-term strategy for humanity …?
Genetic engineering – to improve the human immune system, ‘germ line’ engineering (ethics?), stem cells (AffyXell), gene therapy, etc. Long-term research.
Vaccines – starting to look like mRNA is going to be the way forward, could be a shift in pharma research strategy in favour of these?
Treatments – more mileage here I think, for example SNG (was in) and their inhaled IFN Beta product.
But what if we needed to respond very quickly to something new and (even more) horrible …

Block the virus, stop the infection.
Need to get Affimers trialled in the human body – then we have a ‘backstop’.

It's certainly going to be an enormous source of problems going forwards, if it's anything like the common cold which has over 200 strains we are going to have many more Covid strains to look forward to, yikes!
Out of interest Mr ST where was the source you first found out about Covid back in Nov 2019?
I have been following this damn disease since November 2019 and used to read all the google scholar's scientific reports from Wuhan and, although I am not a "prepper" my family in England, Brazil, France, Spain and USA were prepared for its arrival before the pandemic became a nightmare.
I am now seriously concerned that what we have seen so far it just the tip of the iceberg. Please, I am not here to scare anyone but, and I am not a doctor or scientist, but I am a keen adept of the empirical school of thought and I practice it in my life (man of all trades and master of nothing) but it has served me well.
I have been really focused lately on the happenings in Brazil and they have up to now 92 variants of Covid, which now sees the country dealing with other outbreaks of Zica, Chicungunha, Yellow fever and malaria in regions they never had such issues (mainly the south) and the very young are now making a huge part of the deaths. The mutations they are seeing are being seen in other parts of the world.
Do you know that there is now a mutation originating in Tanzania that has evolved from an entirely different source, the A lineage; the difference between the A and B lineages are three mutations that have come to define the B lineage that has displaced almost all others around the world. I am sure you can find out more if you research it. We have also a very dangerous variant detected In Oregon, and another in California.
And if you can put two and two together, this virus doesn't seem to die away like H1N1 that appeared in 1918, it mutates into different forms and the rushed vaccines will have an up hill battle to fight, and pfizer has already identified weaknesses against the South African strain that has now reached Britain.
I fear, what we have in our hands is bigger than what it is being talked about on TV, just like oblivious most were in January 2020. I am seriously concerned that we will enter some dark times ahead, but I am hoping I am here, writing this, as one of the biggest twats in the world and will be proven wrong and laughed at.
All the best.
G.
