It could work, if you:
- Scan the test’s barcode - ideally on the LFD itself not the packaging, for maximum counterfeit prevention - although might be on the packaging, to minimise the time between taking it out and getting a result; could be on both for best of both worlds).
- This could ping a central database to “activate” that test, from which point the results might only be valid for say 24.5hr, rather than 24hr from when you upload the result. Or there could be a time limit between activating and uploading the result.
- Do test, scan again to read and upload result.
Maybe the answers are in the webinar voiceover and I could find out by watching the whole thing rather than speculating! It sounds like the app will walk the user through it in real time, step by step. Sounds like every detail possible is being considered to reduce user error.
CO... I’m surprised the comment isn’t getting more traction... they are clearly in touch with gates foundation and they are the key manufacturer for a LFT product... I’d say that’s significant if not to guarantee it’s on their radar.
As for this “Pre-test prep will involve scanning a barcode before doing the test, as some of us predicted” still don’t see how it gets around the issue of I test on Monday.... bugger off Tuesday - Thursday ,.. uploaded my result Friday and get my pass.
Granted you’d have to be bloody selfish but there are lots of mortgage Freeman types out there.
The actual quote is something along the lines of “We talk to people like the Bill Gates Foundation, and they agree on the six main sources of error (in lateral flow test results).”
Interesting... sounds like just a throwaway comment but may be more - are Bill and Mel talking to all the app producers? Or mainly the ones associated with tests expected to have the greatest global impact? We can only speculate.
But the presentation looks quite interesting otherwise. Haven’t had the time yet to do more than scan through, but it gives a view of what the app and process look like, which the Avacta test may well use. Remember Alistair said a digital reader will be used for objectivity, since “these tests will be used to limit what people can and can’t do”.
Other interesting points:
- Pre-test prep will involve scanning a barcode before doing the test, as some of us predicted.
- Considered most important for unskilled users, so particularly important for the self test.
Bill is mates with Mologic:

And has invested in GDR:

He’s got a few quid so if he wants to stump up a few billion so he can give away some saliva LFDs, he’s welcome. He’ll be in a queue behind Bojo though
He also had a hand in genedrive too
Whilst talking about Bill Gates, a reminder that he made his a large chunk of his fortune by not manufacturing himself and by licencing out his tech instead. Just something to keep in mind..... :-)
Found it here:
https://bbisolutions.com/en/about-us/events/webinars.html
Click the latest webinar, register, and recording starts playing immediately. Focus is on mobile integration and their novarum app.
But tbf I’m less interested in someone having past links, and more interested in indications of ongoing discussions. Can anyone point us to the BBI presentation? Sorry if I’ve missed it.
oldtrader if you were worried about that article this is going to blow your mind - https://bit.ly/3ogiY5J
Apologies couldn't resist :-)
Well, I was going to assume you were a real LTH and point you to the RNS here:

There was already a connection between the Avacta board and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

This is significant information. Thanks for posting.
Greatly of interest, especially with respect to mass scaling up overseas. Where might I find this/what was the context of this quote?
If BBI are speaking to the Gates foundation about lateral flow Diagnostics/and mobile apps etc...
I’d wager the Gates foundation is aware of Avacta’s test, no?
forget Boris, get Bill on the line for 10bn units.
C.33 mins in... “we have been in contact with the bill gates foundation”
Why would they be doing that....?
