' “would produce enough hydrogen to meet a significant portion of the forecasted demand in the UK”'
We need as much generating power as we can muster. Nobody yet is really tackling the power generation required for trucks, buses, trains where hydrogen facilities are going to be needed as being more functional/attractive/desirable than batteries which carry impossibly heavy weight, have deteriorating power profile, generate emissions during their manufacture. What mW. power would be required to recharge container ships batteries in a practically short time to provide the equivalent of 100,000 hp for up to three months on a voyage, or equivalent of 18000 tonnes of diesel fuel. These ships will visit our country to deliver our goods and will need refuelling, (either electric or fuel cell)
Long term, I know, but we will eventually need to provide for it.
Just like there's lies, damn lies, and statistics!
They can put in the numbers they see now on their demand statistics, but if they don't put in the numbers for EV uptake, or put in numbers that are way too low, their conclusions will be way out.
My conclusion is that they have seen the price of Hydrogen for cars, and some bean counter has decided it would be very VERY profitable if they used their own cheap Nuclear power to make it, and then fudged the numbers to make it look viable.
Haggis, that link has a lot of "could" in it....EDF have obviously done the numbers...
Perhaps they need to build a separate nuclear power station purely to produce hydrogen!
This:
A consortium led by the French energy group believes linking electrolysers to nuclear-generated electricity “would produce enough hydrogen to meet a significant portion of the forecasted demand in the UK”
Is the most ridiculous idea I've heard in years!
With all the EV's coming onto the roads, with a lot of them charging overnight, plus the huge battery storage like Pivot Power 20GW, they won't be able to spare any worthwhile electric from their power stations.

yes they've cornered the market on 50p banter lol . We couldn't identify most of the native bees they were subtle differences but clearly different and hoverflies mixed in.... also get a few Hummingbird hawk moths quite amazing those.
Off the clock I expect :) I get those birds confused... hirondelle my favorite I think. With your handle what's happening with varroa now ? we planted many pollinator wild flowers the last few years, never seen so many different bees, there's still hope !
Hi rooky it was sort of tongue in cheek but you never know, the uk would be uninhabitable if one of these failed.
mus I hadn't even thought of the 9:11 aspect...then there's cyber of course, anyhow it gives me the creeps, just the fact that people living around these sites must have iodine tablets in the cupboard incase theres ever a leak awful.... Sounds like you've done some sterling work for wildlife, something I'm very keen on myself, building swift boxes for the house this year. You had the short straw at winscale perhaps but all those of us around in 1984 had a dose courtesy of chernoby sadly.

There are plenty of security issues surrounding such plants that the public know nothing about.
Taskmaster,
If ever a terrorist gets anywhere close to breaching a nuclear facility, it matters not if hydrogen is involved or not.
Yes. Mainly of ex special forces!
I know someone who has done it.
mus do you work at these sites too ? Seems you are both missing the point somewhat.. Nuclear is expensive...ridiculously expensive..its also a filthy industry respossible for thousands of cancers and birth defects world wide. Hello !!!
https://www.greenpeace.org/international/story/11707/nuclear-security-power-plants-are-poorly-protected-against-malicious-acts/
It takes a year of security checks to get a pass to work in the nuclear stations....
Ha!..I was only at Dungeness a few days ago Muscorum, surrounded by the site of scientific interest. Always blowing a hooley when I go. Im sure they have an armed response team if required.
yes edf have been having a little think...." how can we off load all this expensive electricity" turn it into h2... et voila !
Security is very tight at nuclear power stations.. I visit them regularly.
It's nice to see they are getting onto the hydrogen bandwagon though... They must realise its the future.
H2 + Nuclear together...terrorists dream.
