Ireland votes 'yes' on fiscal treaty

Irish voters have backed the fiscal treaty aimed at making governments keep to strict budgetary guidelines.
The referendum, which was counted on Friday, saw 60.3% of the public vote 'yes' and 39.7% vote 'no'.
"I think this decision taken by the Irish people is a necessary step on the road to recovery but we now have to build on it," said the country's Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore.
"This was not just an exercise...asking people to vote 'yes' - it was also an occasion where we listened to what people we're saying," he said.
Meanwhile, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy welcomed the outcome, saying: "With this vote, the Irish people have given their endorsement and commitment to European integration. This result is an important step towards recovery and stability.
