FTSE 250 movers: Amec and Wood Group lead gains as merger closes in

Thu, 5th Oct 2017 12:54

(ShareCast News) - The FTSE 250 was on the front foot on Thursday as European markets remained cautious alongside ongoing political tension in Spain in relation to Catalan independence.

The best performers in the index on Thursday were Amec Foster Wheeler and Wood Group, after the two firms finally closed their merger agreement.

Wood Group will absorb Amec into its company from next Monday, when shares in the latter will delist from the London Stock Exchange.

Amec was boosted 4.39% by the clearance of the merger, while Wood Group was up 4.29%.

Kaz Minerals was also among the risers after copper prices saw a significant increase on Thursday.

Despite oil prices suffering a fall during the day, Tullow Oil also managed to post a gain of 4% during trading hours.

A number of FTSE 250-lifted firms went ex-dividend, causing their share prices to suffer. Among those was Hays, which saw its stock down almost 3% as a result.

Sports Direct, Bodycote and AA were also among those going ex-dividend, knocking their shares lower.

Hochschild Mining shares lost a bit of lustre as silver prices were down 1% on average.

Pub group Greene King continued to suffer on Thursday after it received a downgrade from Berenberg a day earlier, the German bank lowering its rating to 'hold' from 'sell'.
