The banner proudly proclaims "The UN Commitee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination calls on the Swedish government to stop all activities at the proposed nickel mine in Rönnbäcken south of Tärnaby, Västerbotten, Sweden." It then goes on to say "The intervention is pending a UN investigation on whether mining plans violate the UN racial discrimination rules." So basically the UN have said nothing of the sort.
This is nothing new, a Sami open letter to Beowulf in January 2011 mentions using the UN Commitee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to stop the mine.
Here is the source of that document. It's a general document on discrimination and the sami are a small part of it. It just talks about issues affecting Sami. The initial article posted here is totally false.
Like others, I don’t believe this is genuine. That would be the wrong move. ‘Leapfrog’ would not be received well in Stockholm, when the Saami are registered within the Swedish constitution. That’s where their influence lies. Anyway, the Swedish government wouldn’t accept any lessons on racial discrimination from other nations who are only united by one motive, that is: self-interest! The international community now has one main objective – to raise cash! Some of Sweden’s revenue raised from mining goes into the coffers, distributed to others who cannot balance the books. Not much revenue generated from xxx mt of reindeer sh@te. atb
Are we really supposed to believe the words of this fruit cake lady editor who obviously has a very large axe to grind. I personally find it impossible to believe that the UN would take the time and trouble to get involved in the pressing international subject of reindeer herding by those who Alaskan former work associates of mine referred to as 'Snow Gypsies'.
This is not the subjugation or extermination of a minority we are talking about. It's the herding of reindeer being moved across land that does not belong to the Sami to fatten up the animals and get them to market so that they can be slaughtered in a very cruel way and sold at a huge profit for use in posh restaurants. This or any other proposed mine would take up such a small area of the vast country that it would not affect the herding at all.
I fail to see how this could be considered to be within the remit of any UN committee. It is entirely the private business of the sovereign state of Sweden. Even if the article and the demands of the UN were genuine which I doubt, I could not see the Swedish government reversing their decision to grant a mining permit for Nickel Mountain.
