I won't use tax system to give wealthy a cut: UK PM candidate Gove

Mon, 10th Jun 2019 15:29

LONDON, June 10 (Reuters) - Britain's environment minister Michael Gove, one of the candidates hoping to succeed Theresa May as prime minister, said on Monday he would never use the taxation system to give the wealthy a tax cut, a dig at favourite Boris Johnson.

"One thing I will never do as prime minister is to use our tax and benefits system to give the already wealthy another tax cut," Gove said in a speech to launch his campaign.

It came hours after former foreign secretary Johnson, the bookmakers favourite to replace May, outlined plans to raise the level at which Britons pay the highest rate of tax.

Gove, a leading figure in the campaign to leave the European Union, also said he had a proper plan to deliver Brexit.

"We need a serious leader," Gove said. (Reporting by William James; writing by Michael Holden; editing by Guy Faulconbridge/Kylie MacLellan)
