UK PM candidate Raab: I am the Brexiteer you can rely on

Mon, 10th Jun 2019 11:20

LONDON, June 10 (Reuters) - Dominic Raab, one of the candidates vying to replace Prime Minister Theresa May, said the United Kingdom should leave on Oct. 31 even if that meant reverting to World Trade Organization terms.

"We won't be taken seriously in Brussels unless we are clear that we will walk away on WTO terms if the EU refuses to budge," Raab said in a speech to launch his campaign.

His Brexit team, he said, would be "united in its resolve to deliver Brexit by the end of October."

"I'm the Brexiteer that you can rely on," Raab said. "I don't want a WTO departure - I want a deal."

"If we were forced by EU stubbornness... to leave on WTO terms we can draw from the 39 billion pounds budgeted for the Brexit deal to help businesses through what is undoubtedly a transition," he said. (Reporting by Elizabeth Piper; editing by Guy Faulconbridge)
