[Optimus] From Motley fool take over ? (AV.)

2nd part

The company stands alone in the UK in retaining its composite business model. Insurance is a complex enough business anyway, so that doesn't help it garner analysts' support. Part of the war of words when RSA made its pitch was whether the composite model is more, or less, capital-efficient. The debate went unresolved.
Certainly, the two separate businesses would be more attractive assets for UK players in the life and non-life sectors. But the composite model remains popular in Europe, so Aviva would make an attractive acquisition for a European flagship insurer such as Allianz, Axa, Zurich or even Italian Generali.
BRICS vs PIIGS
A major drag on Aviva's share price is its large exposure to the dysfunctional eurozone. Unlike Prudential (LSE: PRU), which has pursued the growth markets of Asia despite the failure of its bid for AIG's Asian business, Aviva has stubbornly stuck to its own back yard. It may even sell its underperforming US operations.
There's potentially a double hit. Impoverished Europeans might cut back their spending on insurance. And the company's investment portfolio is exposed to the vagaries of sentiment towards the eurozone, although to be fair it has made a good job of limiting exposure to the worst of the PIIGS' sovereign debt.
Its European problem has of late given rise to a capital problem. Analysts have questioned whether it has sufficient capital for the volatility and risk in its business. Its low share price makes capital raising expensively dilutive, probably prohibitively so. But shoring up the capital base wouldn't be so difficult for a larger purchaser.
Let's hope the new management team focus more on generating value for shareholders than for keeping themselves in a job.

Hi Jings my mate
hope you well, just picked up your post
I had to spread my wings , so the buy here today, beside I have got loads tied up already in EMED, so either way as a true beliver and long termer not going to lose there,
however if it touched slightly under 8p I will jump with everything I have and as my final and last buy there, all good there, and GS has just had so much bad publicity and not getting the fair PR they deserved,
do you know. or heard something regarding Goldmen Scache and EMED that I might have missed?

I think AS deal is closer than ever there, and land will be picked up soon, these climate is just perfect for EMED, and spain.

RBS was just too good to be missed and I have been playing and investing so heavy in AIM and now its time to balance it out in FTSE, and my two big one's are RBS and TW. and still in Lloyds, will not sell a single share till at least Q3-4,
however for RBS I be out at 32-33p, which I am expecting it to be July now

[Optimus] From Motley fool today (AV.)

What Next For Aviva?

There's an interesting precedent.
It's a well-known company, popular with private investors, whose name has become a by-word for executive greed coupled with an underperforming share price. Analysts criticise its complex structure and unclear strategic vision. Many think its businesses would be worth more if the company was broken up.
That's Cable and Wireless Worldwide (LSE: CW) I'm describing. But in a different context, the same comments apply pretty well to Aviva (LSE: AV). So has CWW set a precedent? Might Aviva's shareholders see a bid, or break up, finally outing the value in this stock?
Interregnum
Aviva's shares rose 5% on the day that CEO Andrew Moss resigned in response to shareholder anger over his remuneration. Right now there's an interregnum, with incoming chairman John McFarlane taking an interim executive role at the end of the month.
So we have a business where the management was perceived as destroying value in the company, now rudderless until a new executive team is installed. That's ideal timing for an opportunistic bidder to step in. Put it another way: there are a number of international insurers whose management would be negligent if they weren't running their slide rules over the company.
Equally, when the new team is installed at Aviva, it will be incumbent on them to conduct the traditional strategic review. They will want to show shareholders a clear route to increasing the share price. More of the same with better execution might work, but strategic disposals, re-focusing of the business and break-up options will have to be considered. Act in Haste?
Intriguingly, one of the candidates touted for CEO is Andrew Haste who, as former CEO of RSA Insurance (LSE: RSA), was widely credited with turning it around. It's just over 18 months since RSA proposed buying Aviva's general insurance arm under his leadership.
Were he to take on the job, no doubt shareholders would approve. Might he then conclude that a break up of the business would generate more value? That's what he did at RSA. And remember, it was a former executive of Vodafone (LSE: VOD) who came in as CEO of CWW and promptly sold the company to his former employer.
That story has still to play out but it would not be surprising if, having completed the acquisition of CWW, Vodafone then sells the parts of the business it least wants -- such as the undersea cable network -- to a firm it has more value to. That could even be the unsuccessful bidder, Tata Group. CWW shareholders wouldn't have received the benefit of the break-up; instead, Vodafone would have got the assets it wanted very cheaply.
Perhaps the lesson for Aviva's new management team will be that there are more plaudits for breaking up a company yourself than for leaving it to an opportunistic bidder.
Breaking up is hard to do
Is Aviva worth more broken up into its general insurance and life insurance parts? The company stands alone in the UK in retaining its composite b

[RobJC] Quick read (AV.)

and had to log on to say excellent posts this evening chaps (apart from the idea of UKX at 6500!)

Have to say I agree with the sentiments expressed by 'maybetomorrow', this may seem like a bargain, and maybe it is, but there are lots of so called bargains, out there, so make sure you spread your risk. Bear in mind that many safer stocks also yield quite high >7% VOD, AZN, if that's your bag, and if you must buy stocks atm.

Me, although many target buy prices have been met, I'm not interested in anything until EZ issues are resolved, better to buy on the way up than vice-versa. Capital preservation is my number one priority and that can only be guarenteed by holding cash atm.

Quite what will be the catalyst for another bull run is anyones guess? More LTRO? ECB stepping in buying bonds? Eurobonds? You tell me? I think more likely bear market cycle time.

Optimus - I would say it's ok for someone to change their opinion over those 10 days. Particularly in light of Greek elections, I said on here more than a month ago, beware this issue, in many ways I'm sorry to be proved right, I don't know where the Greeks think the money comes from, they should have been set adrift 9 months ago. Like a bad share the Germans must be thinking should I cut my losses, or average down (again!)

GLA. IMO etc. Always enjoy reading counter opinions.
