The press over the weekend regards Kuwait pulling out is a load of BS....why would Kuwait declare they have pulled out when they never declared they were in talks? Someone was getting bored of waiting and trying to flush them out and now this has been smashed down because of wider market, over leveraged people strapped in for the bid and the fact people assume they have a 4week window to get back in......well i'm not patient and i just entered....looks good value down here with Athena doubling production soon irrespective of a bid!

View from Canaccord:
Statement saying it remains in talks with 'bona fide parties'. A timetable for the submission of bids has been set. Ithaca expects to provide a further update 'within the next four weeks'. Downside still looks like about 140-150p, upside to 220-230p. Reasonably balanced but this process has taken a long time and so the recent market nervousness seems justified.

Oil and gas producer Ithaca Energy said it remained in takeover talks with several suitors, but disappointed investors by failing to say who they were or whether there was a favourite. The update followed media claims that Kuwait's national oil company had decided it was no longer interested in the firm. A timetable for the submission of final bids has been set and the company said it expected to provide a further update to the market within the next four weeks.

Ithaca (IAE LN, 174.5p, ▼ 2.2%) - Sell down and Sell off?:Ithaca has made two announcements: that it has completed the sale of its interests in Stella, Hurricane and Helios to Petrofac and Dyas and that it is in discussions with "bona fide parties" involving the sale of the Company. One is portfolio management, the other says two things. One that the Company is focused on unlocking value for shareholders, and the other is that the North Sea is back in vogue as an M&A target. This places all stragglers such as DEO and Lochard, and possibly XEL, on notice that they too could be targets for a take out.

OIL and gas producer Ithaca Energy said yesterday it remains in potential takeover talks, despite claims that Kuwait’s national oil company had pulled out of the race to buy the driller.

North Sea-focused Ithaca. listed on the Canadian and London stock exchanges, remained tight-lipped over the identities of its suitors but has set an undisclosed deadline for bids and will update the market within four weeks.

A host of North Sea operators have been touted as possible buyers for the Aim-quoted company, including Dana Petroleum, the Aberdeen-based producer that was taken over last year by the Korea National Oil Corporation.

Other potential suitors are EnQuest, which de-merged from energy services firm Petrofac, and Taqa, the Abu Dhabi national oil company.

Analysts at RBC Capital Markets said Ithaca could be worth up to C$985 million (£612m), based on a take-out price of about C$3.81-a-share.

In a statement Ithaca’s board said: “Although discussions with parties continue, there can be no certainty of an offer being made for the company.”

[thistle] kuwait petroleum..may buy

BP Plc (BP/) started its biggest auction of North Sea fields, putting up assets valued at 2 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) after the U.K. offered tax breaks for the industry, the Sunday Times reported.
In a separate deal, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co. may buy Ithaca Energy Inc. (IAE), the newspaper reported. Both potential deals follow the U.K.’s decision to cover as much as 75 percent of clean-up costs for old fields, it reported.

[Hornet99] SP Drop

Disappointing fall the last couple of days, all sorts of rumours going round about bidders pulling out, market manipulators etc. The market has fallen generally this morning, but surely with the anticipated Budget measures relating to North Sea Oil companies, tomorrow should see a bit of a revival.

I'm hanging on in there as the current SP is still above what I came in at. It's frustrating not knowing what is going on behind the scenes. A lot of opinion seems to suggest that if there is still an interested bidder, they are waiting for the BW Athena to arrive safely in the NS before formalising things.
