There's the possibility that both could be achieved. Allowing for completion of the current buy-back programme, a tender offer to investors, at say 2 shares purchased for £52 for every nine held, would achieve WTB's stated objective.

Thanks Bakerrabble, but that doesn't follow on with Whitbread's promise to return money to shareholders, unless you translate that as buying back their shares and thereby increasing their bank balance, at the expense of surrendering the shareholders' stake in the company ! I would rather hold my shares, in the decreased pool of availability, in the hope that their value will have increased due to scarcity... but even better would have been a special dividend, that some may have used to reinvest in the company....

It would seem that there isn't going to be one. Instead it would appear that Whitbread will be buying some or all of our shares if we want to sell, presumably at some sort of enhanced price. I may have got the wrong end of the stick and stand to be corrected but a figure of "up to 2.5 billion" was mentioned.
