Some remarkable contributions on the use of Graphene in planes and perhaps trains as Dave the Brave mentioned. As the years have passed as LSE99 says some remarkable other uses came to light, resistence to penetration in the sole of light weight shoes for example. Regarding the possibility of "poor advertising" by saying our planes are fire proof in parts, the travelling public will always seek to move freely and safely if they can and the transport world will have to devise the best ways to assure them of safe travel. Do you recall the Malaysia airliner which disappeared to somewhere in the South Indian Ocean it was thought, and did you notice the high number of cancellations by potential customers who would not fly on that airline. It seems that the disappearance was bo accident, the transponders were said to have been turned off. The turning off should not have been possible, Boeing the plane manufacturer published shortly afterwards a list of supplementary items that Malasia Airline declined to purchase. The plane could not be tracked except for a short period thanks to RR engines being fitted with a device to transmit to engine stations on the ground. If the use of graphene is going to make planes safer in any way, then the airline companies should advertise that to their customers. Better to offer the assurance than wait for a million questions being asked at airports. ---- Yours, Max.

Furthermore; would you as a commercial airline want to advertise your plane as being/having the safest fire ******ant properties? Not great advertising the airline industry?

It should also be noted that of those aircraft crashes in past 12 months many have been over water. The most fatal crashes involving fire were shortly after take off when the planes were fully fuelled. (Stats taken from records on website).
I would think it unlikely that one part of the interior of the aircraft would have saved these people from such disaster due to a graphene inclusive item. I therefore remain of the opinion that the item is weight saving but has to pass fire ******ant safety testing, no doubt the whole interior of the aircraft may benefit it were graphene enhanced, that may be some way off. I further think the RNS was worded in the way it was for potential commercial reasons of the aircraft manufacturer. AIMHO

Hi Max, I am fairly sure the RNS refers to "aircraft interior parts" I am not sure we can assume it refers just to covers or linings of seats. It could be that they want to build the overhead lockers, seat skeletons, seat-back tables and or a host of other elements from the passenger cabin using a Nanene impregnated substance. Clearly some of the intended material has been tested for its fire re tardent properties as you might expect, but my guess is that the "major airline" is looking at more than seat covers which are already highly proofed against fire and to which Nanene may not add much additional benefit.

Puppymonger. Graphene does have fire re.tarding properties. It was an unexpected side effect if I recall correctly. It's perfect for aviation use. The end product is cheaper to make than if it didn't contain graphene, lighter, stronger and fire re.tardant. It will likely be everywhere soon
