Hi Pokerchips,

Take a look at the 20-year price graph of Sainsbury's shares. Don't see why a market price of £5.95 per share wouldn't occur in the future - that would be cheap for a takeover price.

Have a nice - keep smiling, treat everyone with respect, live in a beautiful world and live a beautiful life like myself. Come join me but only if you're a good person PokerChips.

No Sandwiches
Mon 17:30
BoD went to Sainsburys this morning to buy some sandwiches - shelves all empty - none delivered! 5% of shelves empty.. Told no deliveries maybe tomorrow... How hard is it to organize sandwiches??? Why not have a contract with Pret - they would deliver - maybe better quality tooo. Hope no bonuses this year guys. NOT IMPRESSED.

RE: NAV vs Share Price

I think the Qatari's are probably happy to take the dividend twice a year
Amazon?.... well..they would look at what Walmart has done with Asda and think whether it was worth it .... Amazon buying in 2020 say would be about what they would want it to look like say in 2024 ...it has to be a long term investment ...you cant just buy it and then decide to sell it again ...I cant see them buying a whole chain the size of JS ..but...never say never ...I cannot see anyone buying JS until the Brexit/EU and political situation is resolved ..given the unresolved trade deals and tarfiffs and threat to the currency ...

Thanks for taking the time to give a detailed reply I appriciate that. I'd be interested to know why its such a different number from its peers but just I guess if its not a key number theres little to be gained from that knowledge.

Would Amazon be interested ? For the Quatari's are they at the stick or twist stage? As you say though a difficult sector to buy into and improve the business in the current climate.

RE: NAV vs Share Price

I wouldnt take any notice of NAV - what matters is the performance of the business and the return of the money invested in
The
a. earnings per share - performance of the underlying business
b. operating profit - performance of the underlying business
c. ROCE
d. Debt to EBITDA
e. dIvidend cover - paid out of current earnings / retained earnings / borrowings ?
f. Current level of Exceptionals

Are far more important

NAV is important if a company looks like it might go bust and you need to have a good diea of what Equity there is it ..or for possible takover/merger price thoughts

You dont buy a whopping big supermarket chain just because the SP is low or below NAV - it has to be part of a strategy and you going to have to know how you are going to compete with the competitors once you have it ...

Ripe for a takeoever ? .... by whom? and why? and if a new buyer decides they want to close a load of supermarkets they will put the cost to the current shareholders with a lower offer
