"wider implications" anyone with any sense knows to ignore Liberum where RMG are concerned. The CWU got what their members wanted, it's old news move on. Ofcom will be sorted in the courts. Onwards and upwards old girl, your a British Institution and doing a great job.

No, there was a previous ballot for strike action several years ago (can't remember just when) that RM also got ruled unlawful on some technicality.

It is strange topsy turvey world that Royal Mail live's in.

Ofcom's number 1 objective is to preserve the USO. Objective 2 which requires them to introduce competition into market for the benefit of consumers, and 3 is about stimulating innovation.

They are now trying to fine Royal Mail £50m for trying to protect the USO, which if the fine has to be paid, cost more to protect.

Royal Mail were trying to protect the USO against a cherry picking Dutch company (PostNL), who provided a terrible gig economy sweated labour service against an inferior specification to those customers (including Councils and NHS Trusts) who were desperate enough because of budge cuts to test it .

The end result of a venture that was bound to fail because it attempted to defy the fundamental principles of postal letter delivery economics was that PostNL and their co-investors burn't cash and offloaded Whistl having weakened their ability to invest in innovation (in addition to Royal Mail's).

The performance of Ofcom and its predecessor as regulator of the postal sector is woeful. This will now waste a fortune in the courts. The British public, absent any sense coming from Government, can only hope that it results in a positive result for Royal Mail and a complete overhaul of regulation to get people in place who know what they are doing - third time lucky ?
