The left, and to an extent the greens , are often prey to unintended consequences. We are seeing this now in Kallack, whip up sentiment for a decision that outsources emissions to another country or transport media while smugly patting themselves on the back unaware they have achieved less not more. Housing is quite similar, raise expectations but leave others to address the festering sense of entitlement it has created.
A more complex explanation is harder to get across to the voters but is equally relevant without a nice feeling of sentiment attached.
Nothing come through the jungle drums yet ?....
Rickmeister...I absolutely agree with you...just saying the Left were true to the people they represent and it's up to the Government to arrive at a solution. The Left were justified in wanting some influence in exchange for their support, they poll slightly more than the Centre Party and three times more than the MP.
rhump3. Yes I did read about that situation in Berlin. In principle, the idea of rents controls for those in need is a worthy one but in practice it cannot be loaded onto the private sector. If the state wishes to control rent levels then it must arrange the supply of suitable stock. It is , I accept, a massively complex area, with no easy answer but one thing I can say with certainty is that if we see a reversal of house prices, as some call for, it will only further constrain the supply side. I wrote a paper on this subject when the sector was hit by the 2000 banking crisis. Many pundits predicted then a permanent collapse of housing costs and look where we are today. Interestingly Sweden was often cited as a model of good rent control, maybe less so now.
I agree Rick. I am very familiar with the Berlin property situation at the moment. There is a huge shortage of property, and not enough being built. The state government tried to introduce rental controls last year but that failed. Legally it was ruled unconstitutional (rent caps in Germany are a federal matter, not a state one), but practically it meant no one wanted to invest in property- thereby exacerbating the shortage. It really did not work.
Suzy. Yes I was being somewhat glib. Fair rents (and other tenancy controls) is a subject I could debate at length. I fully support the setting of a fair rent for those in housing need but without sufficient income to pay a market rent. However a blanket rent cap, often augmented by other controls, will damage the housing supply in the medium/long term, unless the state steps in big time. We have tried it in this country without success. Not all private landlords are bad and not all social landlords are good, the same applies to tenants. We need to be wary of the four legs good, two legs bad syndrome. For all his faults Lofven could hardly be considered a free marketeer so he must have seen a good need to loosen the rents controls. People seem to like market forces when they are driving prices down but not the reverse. ATB
Please ignore the last bit of Morning All...should have said thanks Xeno.
Rickmeister, I disagree with you about that, the Left had the courage of their convictions and their demands seemed reasonable to me, you can't always depend on the private sector to set a fair rent. By the end of the day we should know which way it goes. Morning All.
ning All.
Thanks Xeno. It would be truly bizarre if Sweden was to democratically vote to become a communist state!. Last one to leave please turn the lights out. I understand your frustration having been a shareholder for a year but bear a thought for those of us who have been with the company for up to ten years. It sounds like Swedish criminals get shorter sentences than we have been subject to. Perhaps its the Chinese influence in Volvo that's encouraging the communists?
Thanks Xeno. Do you think this is why Ulf didn't go for a vote because he is hoping for an election?
I was surprised as who knows if people will change their minds when they actually have to make a decision. He may have got the extra vote.
just want to add that löven also need the liberal party but they have changed side to the rightwing and they wont changes side against.it would make them look like turncoats.
So it might be a bigger chance that they wont form the same goverment as before and that an extra election might be the only option! So lets hope for a new election this summer and faster path to prosperity.
If there is a extra election then yes the rightwing parties will most surely win. People are mostly tired of the leftwing immigrant policy and poor efforts against organized crime. A police officer was killed a few days back by a 17 year old criminal. His penalty will mostly be 2-3 years in youth rehab then released again. its horrible.
Tomorrow , monday the 4th of july stefan löven will give a answer to the goverment offical if he thinks he can form a goverment or not. If he thinks he can then the voteing will happen some day this week.
If he gets 175 votes then the same **** goverment will back but they still have the problem of not being able to pass a budget in the november budget proposals because the communist and center party refuse to let the other party join in and löven has said he will resign if he has to rule with a rightwing budget again. So even if they form a goverment now it will fall again in november. He is trying to pressure the communist party and center party to comply but he is only shooting himself in the foot. The communist party are becomeing the big winners from this conflict because people see that the communist leader keeps her word and her ambitions have grown now to even try replace the social demokrats as the biggest party in sweden.
The voteing power is being diluted on the leftwing side and they know if there comes a new election they will lose a lot of seats (mandate) in the goverment.
I hope they fail to form a leftwing goverment but on the otherside if the goverment comes back online then baylan has to come with an answer.
Sometimes i wish we just get a no from the goverment that way kurt could just take em to court and win 100% there just like boliden did, it only took em 3 months from a no to a yes in court. Wasteing time is a goverment speciality that is known world wide.
I have been a beowulf stockowner for a year now and paitence is sometimes growing thin but i know this is a rock solid buziness oppertunity with huge investments gains but as it looks now we might have to wait to atleast novemeber to get a goverment with a brain.
Well If Lofven doesn't get the votes tomorrow, then we can expect 3 further weeks of failed votes before an election in September. What I am hearing (and perhaps Xeno would be able to confirm) os that the center and right are more likely to win an election, so by year-end we might see some action.
If Lofven gets back in, I would hope that KB is in the starting blocks ready to hit them
Evening.. Wotitsworth,Yes! Mr Baylan imo has taken some big risks re the Kallak application, when he could have delivered for the many on behalf of the Government.. The ministry will also be aware that investor sentiment is supportive of the CEO’s correct handling of recent issues. When it was apparent that UNESCO had given their reply, the Swedish market went positive (40%ish up) before the comment details were even known.. Baylan will have taken note.. Leak? Lol.. Baylan knows that BEM are only interested in what the proposals merit at this time, as do the investor, just one of the reasons why the SP is holding fairly well in choppy waters.. Imo only atb…
Well Said Aug.
Seems to me that if anything, the main concern from UNESCO were transport routes and Sami Reindeer Husbandry OUTSIDE OF LAPONIA........These issues will in fact be addressed later in the permitting process and should not be part of this decision.
If this govt does get back in on Monday, then I believe they are no longer a "Caretaker"govt hence we are back on track for demanding answers to their tardi response.
Evening.. ibjj, “Does anyone honestly believe a mine in the back of beyond, whose application has long since ceased to have any meaning or value, is on anyone’s agenda?
Yep, me! The MI records, that the submitted proposals are good… The CEO records, that the submitted proposals for concession has FA to do with UNESCO.. We both know that the Ministry do not want to deny the grant of concession.. So then, someone has to decide on what to do with UNESCO’s input re the decision/concession.. Having read UNESCO’s comments, and the following most impressive statements coming from BEM (RNS’s), should any conditions/caveats come with any award, that can be attributed to UNESCO’s comments, that could set parameters in scope, for the Environmental court, then its clear, we are going into battle.. UNESCO, can bring their international reputation – just for starters! That’s what is on the agenda.. lol IMO only atb………….
Morning Ibjj....And the burning question is when will the next election be?
It's so corrupt. Should just get the approval and a huge chunk of cash as compensation for this bull**** we've had to go through
Also interesting to see how many other mines that are closer to Laponia than Kallak
Make no mistake, every Swedish MP will have been putting in a shift every day for the past week. Sadly, none of their energy has been exerted for anything other than their grubby pursuit of power and the preservation of their jobsworth careers.
Baylan is a prime example.
Does anyone honestly believe a mine in the back of beyond, whose application has long since ceased to have any meaning or value, is on anyone’s agenda?
Just forget Kallak until after the next election.
That was a good read. Thanks Pocko.
A key point seems to be that most of the complaints, ie the transportation routes, are to be addressed in the next stage of the process. It certainly isn't insurmountable and all stakeholders will get their say.
We just need more local people to support the idea of the development for economic reasons.

Yes Sooz, I do like politics, but I also like favourable outcomes and we still aren't seeing one precisely because of the politics in play here, which really is a fair bit whacky. Lol.
Hello FarEnd...missed your post......yes, no..we don't like it. I'm trying not to post so much but I don't want you to think you're being ignored because I'm a woke snowflake, which I'm certainly not. ;-)
Richmeister....How many times have I been told that...no religion, no politics and my answer is always the same...what else is there. Well, there's always trees and plants, I suppose, gardening is fairly safe provided you don't try to give any tips to Roller1. But who cares about safe. Lol.
