....how well will Windows work on the ARM-based systems compared with traditional Intel and AMD processors? We won't really know the answer to these questions until users get the final code and final machines in the second half of the year, but we'll know more in the next few weeks as the consumer preview—what used to be known as a beta version—ships. In the meantime, Microsoft has been slowly explaining some of the changes and what they will mean. In particular, it just released a lot of information about the Windows on ARM version. ................. Indeed, I will be very interested in seeing the performance, battery life, and weight differences among the different ARM-based models, as well as those based on Intel and AMD processors. The comparisons will be most important in the tablet market, where, this fall, we are likely to see machines based on ARM-based processors from Nvidia, Qualcomm, and TI; AMD's Hondo low-power x86 platform; and Intel's Core family (Ivy Bridge) and a new generation Atom platform known as Clover Trail. WOA will be designed without the traditional hibernate and sleep options, but will instead have a "connected standby" mode, so that the machine is always updating applications. The feature will eventually be offered for Windows on x86 as well, and Intel in particular has been talking about it as part of Haswell-based Ultrabooks due in 2013. http://forwardthinking.pcmag.com/operating-systems/294103-windows-on-arm-3-big-questions
February 12, 2012 Microsoft continues to churn out good news, is getting analyst upgrades and still looks solidly undervalued. Key positive news recently from Microsoft. It announced it intends to ship a version of its forthcoming Windows 8 software for processors based on ARM Holdings (ARMH) ................ This is a positive for ARM Holdings as analysts expected Microsoft to release Windows 8 for ARM several months after its software for Intel enabled devices. More importantly, it should also help Microsoft gain traction in the Tablet space. The company has been getting a lot of love from analysts recently. Rick Sherlund just reiterated a "Buy" ration on the company, Morgan Stanley reemphasized its "overweight" on MSFT and Barclays raised its FY2013 EPS estimates to $3.20 a share. http://seekingalpha.com/article/359861-why-microsoft-is-still-a-buy-at-30
Feb 13, 2012, 2:00 am EST ARM Holdings (NASDAQ:ARMH) – Numerous companies are riding Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) coattails, and one that’s sharing in the booming success is ARM Holdings. ARM, whose chip designs are used in Apple’s iPhone and iPad, rose Friday after the company beat market expectations. ARM is particularly benefiting from the surge in iPhone 4S sales, which analysts believe brings in almost double the royalties per unit as previous models. Licensing growth also has been buoyed by more tech manufacturers choosing to license ARM’s technology. ARM’s royalty revenue is growing faster than the industry rate, and the company is gaining share in its target markets. ARM also has been boosted by increasing inclusion of its chip designs into other devices, from washing machines to smart cards. Best known for its low-power chips used in small, portable devices, ARM also is entering into laptops and servers. http://www.investorplace.com/2012/02/trade-of-the-day-armh-arm-holdings/

February 11, 2012 Though it might not come as much of a surprise to a lot of people, I'm going to say it anyway: Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) isn't the powerhouse it once was. The company's stock is up from the $23 low it hit back in June, but even at it's current $30 price point it's nowhere near the $58 peak it started the 21st century with. Fighting increasing competition from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), various Linux distributions and even Chrome OS from Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), some believe that the company's best days are far behind it. That is why 2012 is such an important year for the Redmond software giant. This year will see the release of Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and possibly even Office 15. It will also see the first release of a version of Windows that has been specifically designed for use on tablets, as opposed to the "tablet" versions of previous Windows releases that were essentially the basic version of the operating system with little features such as multitouch support added. Aiming to compete in the iPad's world, the tablet-friendly version of Windows 8 has been built specifically to work with the mobile-standard ARM processors from ARM Holdings (NASDAQ: ARMH). It's even known as Windows on ARM, abbreviated by Microsoft as WOA and by some others as WARM. There's still a lot that isn't known about Windows on ARM, though it seems like more information is being released every day. The tablet OS is aimed to launch at the same time as other versions of Windows 8, and will come bundled with various software titles including versions of Office 15's Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote programs. The inclusion is seen by some as a major selling point since it will give users immediate access to the four most commonly-used components of Office without having to buy and install them separately. This is especially benefitial considering that the company is taking a "walled garden" approach to WOA similar to Apple's iOS operating system, meaning that only Microsoft-authorized apps can be installed on devices running the OS. Analysts seem to think that the release of Windows 8 and Windows on ARM will help the company to find some stability and possibly regain a little bit of market share, especially since it will present a powerful tablet alternative to the iPad for those who aren't fans of Apple. Morgan Stanley's Adam Holt thinks that Windows 8 and WARM will give the company a bit of leverage on the iPad's tablet dominance, especially considering that the OS X version of Office 15 will trail behind the Windows-native versions. He reinterated Microsoft's "overweight" rating with the firm and set a price point target of $33 per share for Microsoft stock. http://beta.fool.com/croaxleigh/2012/02/11/microsoft-warming-big-year/1907/?source=TheMotleyFool

Whats the reason for todays drop?

Well done trevi - hope you managed to get out near the top! those extra minutes in bed cost you some beer money lol - however a win is a win!
Nomura has maintained its neutral rating and 580p target price for chip designer ARM Holdings, but acknowledged that the group's fourth quarter results indicated a "strong beat". "ARM reported a very solid set of numbers this morning, beating the lowered market expectations. Revenues were particularly strong in the processor segment, both in licensing and royalty revenues, driving gross and operating margins significantly above expectations despite the higher-than-expected operating expense," the broker said. However, Nomura says that for the current fiscal year, the global macroeconomic environment remains uncertain: "management is typically conservative with guidance, but this time concerns around the macro-environment and industry confidence seem higher to us."
sure did! have been holding approx 7000 shares av £6.30 for a while - bought another 10000 shares yesterday afternoon at £5.95, so happy days! i see they were up to £6.40 early doors but i was still in bed! looking to sell the lot at £6.35 sometime today (hopefully they will!) and knowing arm they will take a pause and drop back to under £6 then i will go back in! thats the plan anyway!
Outlook ARM enters 2012 with a robust opportunity pipeline for licensing and a record order backlog, helped by new product introductions and new markets. In addition, market share gains in long-term growth sectors look set to continue as our Partners introduce new chips based on ARM technology. Given industry analysts are forecasting that semiconductor revenues declined about 10% sequentially in Q4 and given ARM's very strong license revenues in Q4, we expect group dollar revenues for the first quarter to be in-line with current market expectations of around $200 million. For full-year 2012, the global macro-economic situation remains uncertain and is likely to influence consumer and enterprise spending, thereby potentially impacting semiconductor revenues and industry confidence. Assuming the macroeconomic situation does not deteriorate significantly, we expect group dollar revenues for the full-year to be at least in line with current market expectations of just over $860 million.
trevi - you may well be right - did you go for it?
Chip designer ARM Holdings saw full-year revenues rise 21% from £406.6m to £491.8m in the 12 months ended December 31st. Pre-tax profits jumped 37% from £167.4m to £229.7m, while earnings per share rose from 9.34p to 12.45p. Meanwhile, the full-year gross margin, excluding share-based payments costs of £3.5m, improved from 94.3% to 95.1% in 2011. The board has recommended a final dividend of 2.09p per share, up 20% on the year before. This gives a total dividend of 3.48p, also an increase of 20%.
