May 11, 2011 Another dot-com bubble takes shape A decade after the disastrous dot-com crash, internet stocks are once again in danger of becoming a "bubble" market. "Whether this is another dot-com bubble depends how you define bubble," says Adrian Drury, a principal analyst at the research company Ovum. "If you define it as an irrational exuberance for stocks exposed to growth in specific markets, such as social networking, then we are not on our way to a second dot-com bubble, we are already there." Investment in internet start-ups has so far this year reached its highest level since 2000, the height of the dot-com boom that preceded a crash that wiped billions of dollars off the value of technology stocks. ............ ............ Investors and analysts believe that, this time around however, the boom in internet stocks is based on more secure foundations than that of a decade ago. Underpinning the surge in internet stocks is rapidly evolving technology enabling web-based communications to explode across the globe. According to the research outfit International Data Corporation, more than 100 million smartphones were shipped worldwide in the last quarter of last year. This represents an increase of more than 87 per cent over the same period in 2009. "The driver of this phenomenon is the rapid growth in the adoption of smartphones," says Mr Drury. "This is having the effect of putting powerful hand-held computers into the hands of a mushrooming sector of consumers across the world. "This is the underlying market dynamic powering the current boom in internet stocks." http://www.thenational.ae/thenationalconversation/industry-insights/technology/another-dot-com-bubble-takes-shape
NASDAQ hits highest level since the year 2000, and Dow does pretty well too ... February 17, 2012 It was March 10th, the year 2000, and the NASDAQ hit 5132.52. Then dotcoms crashed. Ever since, the NASDAQ has looked awful. But last night the index hit its highest level since the first year of the new millennium. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones hit its highest level since May 2008. Is this a sign of good times to come? The slide in the NASDAQ from its March 2000 peak was nothing short of catastrophic. And once it collapsed, it pretty much stayed down for years. The index looked to be staging a comeback just before the words ‘credit crunch’ started appearing in every other headline, and down it went again. As recently as March 2009 the index was just 1269, less than a quarter of its all-time high. But, bit by bit, it has been rising. And last night the NASDAQ closed at 2959, its highest closing point since 2000. Okay, it is still way below the all-time high, and indeed, when it fell below 3000 back in 2000, the collapse seemed pretty disastrous. When you consider that both Apple and Google, the two miracle stocks of the last decade reside in the NASDAQ, it becomes clear that the index was absurdly overvalued back in 2000. The story for the Dow is more encouraging. This index closed at 12904 last night, its highest closing point since May 2008. The Dow itself hit its all-time high on 9 October 2007 , with a reading of 14164. Its pre dot com crash high was 11722, set on 14 January 2000. To put that in context, the FTSE 100 hit its all-time high on 30 December 1999 with reading of 6930. Back in 2007 it looked as if it might pass that record, and on 31 October that year hit 6721. Last night the FTSE 100 stood at 5911. I often think the awful performance of the stock market since 2000 provides the true underlying story of the economy. Back in the early noughties you could ask yourself: what do you believe – the stock markets or the economic data? It now looks as if the stock markets were giving us the true underlying picture. It is also the case that the US economy has enjoyed a much stronger recovery than the UK’s, so it is perhaps fitting that the Dow should have passed its pre dot com crash high, while the FTSE 100 still languishes below it. thanks for that ... and we will do... :)
Congratulations - you are creating one of the rare events that stops me from reading my Sunday newspaper. Your research and postings I find to be truly informative. I too would welcome a smaller iPad and the integration of MacOS X with iOS into a Macbook Pro or similar to bring greater functionality into my everyday worklife. Please keep us informed as you appear to have an extremely close contact/source to tweak out well informed speculation that keeps us "watching this space".
Rumor: Apple to Launch 8-Inch iPad at MWC FEBRUARY 16, 2012 Do you like to own an Apple tablet but find the 10.1-inch display on the iPad 2 too big for your taste? You may soon get the chance to own a smaller Apple tablet as rumors of an 8-inch iPad are floating around. These rumors started with The Wall Street Journal whose sources have hinted that Apple is currently testing a tablet that’s smaller than the iPad 2 and sized at just about 8 inches. According to the publication’s sources, suppliers have seen the 8-inch device being shown around by Apple. The company is said to be qualifying suppliers for the tablet. The resolution on the rumored 8-inch iPad is said to be 1024 x 768, the same as that on the iPad and iPad 2. This rumor could be true, not only because the source is a reputable publication but also because Apple needs to make a smaller tablet. The tablet market is huge and Apple has proven that the platform is a hit but other tablet makers are slowly eating into the market share of Apple. In my opinion, Apple will benefit from the launch of an 8-inch iPad since it will widen the choices of consumers and it would attract users who prefer smaller displays like the Amazon Kindle Fire or the Galaxy Tab 7.0 or 7.7. Still, the 8-inch iPad is just a rumor until Apple announces the product so you may want to take this with a grain of salt. And even if it is indeed true that there are plans for an 8-inch iPad and it’s in the testing phase, it’s still not certain if Apple will decide to launch it. I am personally wishing for an 8-inch iPad. That size would be ideal for my purposes and it’s not too bulky to carry around. If the rumor is true, there’s a possibility that Apple will launch it at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event. http://www.technobaboy.com/2012/02/16/apple-8-inch-ipad-rumor/
As the 2012 edition of Mobile World Congress quickly approaches, NVIDIA sends its invite to a series of events, the ultimate subject being their quad-core Tegra 3 processor sitting on a smartphone! This reveal will end up being the first time we’ve seen a quad-core System on Chip working on a device smaller than a tablet, and in true classic fashion, will mark one year exactly since we first laid eyes on the original announcement of Tegra 3, then code-named Project Kal-El. Superman has since landed on the Asus Transformer Prime and will soon find its way onto several other tablets, also perhaps being released at this same set of events. NVIDIA has come strong to the show with not only a massively impressive first release of their chip on the Transformer Prime, but with detailed descriptions of how their processors work and why we should be jumping for joy at them. As for how excited we should be for Tegra 3 on smartphones, well, just look at the rumors! Just this morning we had another note come through on the HTC Edge, a device that will almost certainly be coming to the MWC 2012 stage with a Tegra 3 processor under the hood. And you can bet we’ll be there at Mobile World Congress 2012 to bring you all of the NVIDIA action as it drops, including but not limited to phones, tablets, and straight up Tegra 3. You can bet there’s also going to be some LG smartphone action here as well – check the image above to get an idea of what that LG device might look like. Also watch the MWC 2012 and Tegra portals for more up to the minute updates about the whole show! Meanwhile check the power – http://www.slashgear.com/nvidia-mwc-2012-invite-teases-worlds-first-quad-core-phone-09212841/
Nvidia's First Quad-Core Phones to reveal at MWC 2012 Nvidia is warming up itself for another first Tegra 3 powered smartphones at this year's Mobile World Congress event. company has started sending press invites to media outlets.. However, there's is no clear information about which Android OEM will take this opportunity to move on Tegra 3 platform. Rumors hinting HTC to grab this chance with their upcoming HTC Edge but nothing is confirmed yet. http://www.myitechworld.com/2012/02/nvidias-first-quad-core-phones-to.html
The consumer version of Microsoft’s newest hero system Windows 8 will be previewed this year in Spain at Mobile World Congress 2012. We’ve been invited to the event, it taking place on the 29th of February at 3PM local time and will be bringing you all the action we can capture as it happens. This Consumer preview will likely let us know exactly what we’ll be looking at in the release for Windows 8 to the broader market early this year, hopefully inside the end of February or soon after. The invitation doesn’t give any clues as to how the actual consumer version of Windows 8 will be any different from the versions we’ve seen thus far, so we must assume that we’ve essentially seen it all already – but you never know! This version of Windows 8 should let us in on the newest version working on both desktop computers and tablets, and should give us an idea of when manufacturers will be releasing devices with the newest system on devices natively. Will 2012 be the year that Windows makes its triumphant return to the mid-class between mobile and desktop? We’ll be live at the events on Wednesday, February 29th, 2012, and you can join us in our Mobile World Congress 2012 portal right here: [MWC 2012] Don’t forget then to stick around for the rest of the MWC 2012 action which will surely bring some surprises alongside the releases we’ve been teased with over these past few weeks between CES and now. Can’t wait! http://newstech24.com/2012/02/microsoft-windows-8-consumer-preview-announced-for-mwc-2012/
Will Apple Reign Supreme at MWC despite Not Participating? Once again, the folks at Apple won’t be making their presence felt in this year’s Mobile World Congress. But that doesn’t appear to be affecting their chances of grabbing the most headlines following this yearly event, to be held at Barcelona, Spain towards the end of February. Previously, Apple’s iPhone 4 emerged victorious in MWC 2011, winning Best Mobile Device accolades. This happened despite Apple not being officially part of the event. And with the new iPhone 5 possibly months away, it looks like most of the attention at MWC 2012 will be focused on tablets. Samsung is speculated to be previewing a new tablet, with its very own Exynos 5250 processor, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS and 11.6-inch screen with 2560 x 1160 resolution. On the other hand, the iPad 3 is still expected by most to be out sometime in March. As far as new smartphones are concerned, we definitely won’t be seeing any Galaxy S3 at the MWC, as recently confirmed by Samsung. The new Galaxy smartphone might see a late second quarter/early third quarter release date, just like the iPhone 5. So how will Apple be stealing the scene and the MWC-related headlines? Even with new versions of the iPad and iPhone yet to see the light of day, Apple remains the main point of comparison against new handsets and tablets released or previewed. There is also the possibility Apple will be previewing the iPad 3 in a special event to take place around the same time as MWC 2012. That alone might be enough publicity to draw some of the attention away from Barcelona, if such an event does happen. http://dailynewscorner.com/will-apple-reign-supreme-at-mwc-despite-not-participating/7295/
7 February 2012 Apple working on ARM port for Mac OS X: will Macbook Airs see it first? A paper by a Dutch intern reveals that in 2010 it took just 12 weeks to get Mac OSX's kernel ported from Intel to ARM as part of a 'larger project'. Like Microsoft and Windows 8, there are bigger aims here.. In a few months, we're going to be seeing Windows 8 running on ARM-based tablets. But if a paper released (from embargo) by the Delft University of Technology in Holland is anything to go by, we might soon be seeing Apple laptops running Mac OS X - the desktop operting system, not the iOS of the iPhone and iPad - also running on ARM. What would those laptops be like? For one, they would either have colossal battery lives (if they had the same build as standard MacBooks) because the ARM architecture uses far less power than Intel; or they would be comparatively low-powered but weigh next to nothing (if the battery was slimmed down to give them the same sort of life as existing machines). The paper, which was picked up by iMore, details how Apple's Platform Technologies Group in 2010 got down to working on how to get Darwin, the kernel of Mac OS X, running on the ARM architecture. February 18, 2012 Are ARM Looking To Be Part Of Apple Desktops As OS X and iOS Converge? ARM Based Chips On Apple Desktops Coming Soon? Does Apple have ARM based desktops in their sights? An intern who found a place working at Apple has shown how the Cupertino based corporation are potentially seeking to make a shift with OSX based devices to an ARM chipset, kicking the relatively recent move to Intel in 2005/6 into touch. The interns name is Tristan Schaap who was seemingly involved in a 12 week internship with Apple at their “platforms technology group” in 2010, and while doing this internship at Apple, managed to put down enough information based in the work to create a thesis, this was loosely based on making the “lower half” of Mac OSX work on an ARM processor. Submitted in 2010 but only just release due to its content, the report seems to suggest that Apple could be looking to shift their desktop/laptop processors to the power saving ARM option, however Tim Cook would lead us to believe otherwise by saying that if you want an ARM based macbook go get an iPad. But who knows where Apple will go with their processors, in some ways a unified processor option makes sense and in other areas it looks less significant. Apps drive convergence: All this talk of unifying Apple processors does have some reasoning behind it though when you see just how similar Mountain Lion is to iOS compared to earlier versions of the desktop operating system. In a very recent interview in the WSJ Tim Cook talks about how OSX and iOS are morphing in ways that seem natural: “We see that people are in love with a lot of the apps and functionality here,…so, anywhere where it makes sense, we are going to move that over to Mac.” And with the release of Mountain Lion, OSX makes no bones about wanting to be more iOS like in its functionality and overall look and feel, and will extend the iPad like functionality that saw gesture control features and integrated apps ported into OSX Lion more than in previous incarnations of the wonderfully slick operating system. http://www.mobileinquirer.com/2012/are-arm-looking-to-be-part-of-apple-desktops-as-os-x-and-ios-converge/

CES 2011: Raw video - NVidia's CEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKmaYcdPbRk
May 24th, 2011: "In the 2013-2014 timeframe, Nvidia is set to launch its highly anticipated Project Denver CPU and a recent report comes to claim that this processor will feature specialized x86 emulation hardware, to better compete with its Intel and AMD rivals." http://news.softpedia.com/news/Nvidia-s-Project-Denver-ARM-SoC-May-Feature-x86-Hardware-Emulation-201982.shtml
"Project Denver is an ARM architecture CPU being designed by Nvidia, targeted at personal computers, servers, and supercomputers. The CPU package will include an Nvidia GPU on-chip. The existence of Project Denver was revealed at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. Microsoft also announced that the upcoming Microsoft Windows 8 operating system will be able to run on ARM architecture CPUs such as Project Denver. In a March 4th 2011 Q&A article CEO Jen-Hsun Huang revealed that Project Denver is a five year 64-bit ARM architecture CPU development on which hundreds of engineers had already worked on for three and half years and which also has 32-bit ARM architecture backwards compatibility. The Project Denver CPU internally translates the ARM instructions to an internal instruction set, using firmware in the CPU. According to Charlie Demerjian, Project Denver was originally intended to be a x86 CPU, but was changed to the ARM-64 instruction set because Nvidia could not obtain a license to Intel's patents" http://www.facebook.com/pages/Project-Denver/188881574472741
http://blogs.nvidia.com/2011/01/project-denver-processor-to-usher-in-new-era-of-computing/ Jan 5 2011 "Microsoft’s announcement that it is bringing Windows to ultra-low power processors like ARM-based CPUs provides the final ingredient needed to enable ARM-based PCs based on Denver. Along with software stacks based on Android, Symbian, and iOS, Windows for ultra-low power processors demonstrates the huge momentum behind low-power solutions that will ultimately propel the ARM architecture to dominance. An ARM processor coupled with an NVIDIA GPU represents the computing platform of the future. A high-performance CPU with a standard instruction set will run the serial parts of applications and provide compatibility while a highly-parallel, highly-efficient GPU will run the parallel portions of programs. The result is that future systems – from the thinnest laptops to the biggest data centers, and everything in between — will deliver an outstanding combination of performance and power efficiency. Their processors will provide the best of both worlds, while enabling increased battery life for mobile solutions. We’re really excited to help engineer smarter brains for the next major era in computing."

6 Jan 2011 : Shares in chip designer ARM Holdings jumped another 8% today after Microsoft confirmed its new smartphones and tablet computers will use the British company's architecture and top graphics chip-maker Nvidia chose it for its new products. ARM shares have soared 25% since talk of its adoption by Microsoft surfaced just before Christmas. Today they rose 35.6p to 507p — their highest since the dotcom bubble burst 10 years ago. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-business/article-23911374-microsoft-makes-ally-of-arm-holdings-in-war-on-apple.do
February 17, 2012 " Intel's new mobile chips may give wireless carriers what they want: branded phones of their own, rather than having to rely on third-party handset makers to drive sales -- and take subsidies away from carrier revenue. If Intel can deliver that, then any concerns that Intel is too late to the mobile game could evaporate quickly -- and the market's love affair with rival ARM Holdings , which had a head start in mobile, could end as quickly as it began." http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2012/02/17/these-3-dow-stocks-closed-the-week-with-a-bang.aspx
Feb. 17, 2012, 2:39 p.m. EST BERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) — The tech sector is abuzz over the fact that Microsoft Corp. stock looks like it is emerging from a decadelong slumber. A number of factors are playing into the run-up, which looks likely to continue through 2012. Microsoft: The actual changes going on that could affect future earning are as follows: ? the potential for Windows Phone success with Nokia Corp. and others; ? The upcoming release of Windows 8 for the PC; ? the sudden appearance of Windows running on the ARM Holdings PLC platform. Since we are seeing no serious traction with the Windows Phone, and Windows 8 to me is a routine upgrade, like the ones seen before, the only true and new variable here is Windows on ARM . Everything else is already accounted for. Of course perception is everything, and Microsoft still has a lot of potential. The company did not stop growing in 2001; it has shown steady progress. If it were more exciting as a company (or smaller), there would be more interest in the stock. If Microsoft wisely began to spin out three to five separate and publicly traded businesses, there would be a lot of excitement too. So far there has been no interest in doing so. The way I see the scenario, there is only one thing that is going to drive Microsoft stock to $40 and beyond, and that’s the success of Windows on ARM chips. Now the good news and the bad news: The good news is that Redmond will continue doing well in its dreary old-fashioned way. There is still no close competition on the desktop, and all the traditional aspects of the company appear to be running smoothly. Windows 8 is still a monopoly and will result in a little boost, but not much. People are not going to flock to the upgrade, but it will do OK. Now the bad news: I cannot see how Windows on ARM will become anything other than a loser or something of a nightmare for Microsoft. The company has never done well off the Intel platform. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/taking-stock-of-the-microsoft-rally-2012-02-17?link=MW_latest_news Fingers crossed and everything :))

HP Project Moonshot servers due first half of 2012 The Silicon Valley giant reveals servers based on ARM and Atom chips will start shipping within months. By Jennifer Scott, 14 Feb 2012 at 08:53 HP will be shipping servers based on ARM chips and Intel's Atom processors in the first half of this year. Confirmation of the launch timescale came today from Dave Donatelli, executive vice president and gemeral manager of enterprise storage, servers and networking [ESSN] at HP. The servers were born out of the 'Project Moonshot' research programme developed by HP and announced at the start of last November. The servers will be a significant boost to British chip designer ARM, which has traditionally been overlooked in favour of Intel and, to a lesser extent, AMD x86 processors. Donatelli took to the stage at HP's first global partner event in Las Vegas today, telling 3,000 HP partners his company was proud of the "game changing" announcements it had made in the server space in the past 100 days. "Instead of building out of x86, we are going to build servers out of ARM chips and Atom chips, those same chips from your smartphones," he said. "This will lead to all kinds of incredible advancements and change the market." Donatelli then confirmed the new servers would be shipping in "the first half of the calendar year." http://www.itpro.co.uk/638845/hp-project-moonshot-servers-due-first-half-of-2012
