Chitta123 ref 16.26 post You are missing my point I do ot disagree with you with regards to gas security and the use of a regassification vessel. My point was specific to the Dorset Spirit it is only three years old so is too new to be converted as I am not sure that the costs of building together with related costs and ROI would have been recouped yet.
Hi chitta totally respect your view but worth considering the Russian scare mongering tactics regarding nord stream2
https://www.euractiv.com/section/energy/news/kremlin-nord-stream-2-start-will-help-cap-gas-prices-in-europe/
However gas/energy security long term is a different matter
Kilroot and other gas power stations will be needed in the interim between fossil fuels and green energy
IM will provide that along with Hydrogen storage as and when it is ready. This is a bit of a long read but worth it noting Ballymunford and Kilroot energy park and a £600m investment
https://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/business/ulsterbusiness/profile/mid-and-east-antrim-a-centre-of-excellence-for-the-rapidly-emerging-hydrogen-economy-in-ni-40833471.html
Stokey.question I don't think we have 2 years. We need something before then and regasification vessels are surely the answer.A cold winter will put a huge strain on heating and power generation and gas is the stepping stone to Hydrogen.Infastrata are right in the thick of it for me and Barrow and Belfast would be the starting points in my view.
Thanks TTNY great research that was the missing part of the jigsaw for me
For anyone interested this ties in with the info I posted this morning from cenkos
If correct it is a great project for H&W

ThisTimeNextYeer ref 16.44 post As you say a fantastic new customer I wonder if INFA can get the contract to do the regular dry dockings for those.
Hi folks. Re Dorset Spirit. This vessel isn't owned by Teekay but by a company called Altera infrastructure. www.alterainfra.com .This company was once part of Teekay but is now a separate entity from them.
They own and operate 25+ tankers (some massive ones too) as well as other vessels and tugs.
Have a look at their website and the fleet they have. This is a fantastic new customer particularly with the size and tonnage of some of the vessels they operate.

Chitta123 ref 16.15 post I am not sure as I have not been involved in the company that long but I think it is likely to be a few years.
Stokey.question how long do we assume it will take for the gas caverns to be available for storage .assuming they start this year.
Oldtramp,Edwin Poots Couldnt spell it out any better imho ,hope to see an announcement soon ,a rerate on the cards here imho gla ,anybody seen Tango ?
Chitta123 ref 09.15 post I have just checked the original LinkedIn post that first suggested that the Dorset Spirit was on route to Belfast. The Dorset Spirit was not mentioned by name but ThisTimeNextYeer was able to identify it. The post said it was under tow for repair. While in principle the suggestion that a ship could be converted for storage of LNG cannot be discounted I do not think that this is the case in relation to Dorset Spirit. While it is strange that it is making the journey across the Atlantic from Canada to Belfast as it is only three years old I would be surprised if it is for a conversion to be used for LNG storage.
Thanks for posting that mcadder i then read onto the next debate and found this
Edwin Poots DUP
I was, perhaps, ahead of some colleagues across the way in that, when I was Minister previously, I brought in a planning policy statement for renewable energy. As a consequence of that, we are sitting on around 45% renewable energy in Northern Ireland, whereas other parts of the United Kingdom have struggled to reach 20%. Currently, the big opportunity for us lies in hydrogen. We can produce hydrogen from water and renewable electricity instead of importing fossil fuels from around the world.
I want to work with other Departments, including the Department for Infrastructure and the Department for the Economy in particular, to ensure that we embrace the opportunity that exists for Northern Ireland to lead the way on renewable energy. I want Northern Ireland to be a net exporter of renewable energy. That is an entirely achievable plan, and we need to apply ourselves to making it work.
mcadder - great find & supports the view expressed by JW about a decision in a matter of weeks.Edwin Poots seems at least to have the papers currently 'on his desk' so in the next two weeks does not seem an unreasonable time frame within which a decision to be made.
As a precursor to what will be the SP by Christmas maybe we should ask people 'Deal or No Deal' with regards the ML.On balance with the current issue of energy supplies in the UK I am going for 'Deal' would anyone like to follow.
mcadder ref 13.30 post I have not read the scientific or planning evidence so can I ask do you know what it says in brief. I know in England the planning officer would make a recommendation to the planning committee has anything similar been done in this case?
FWIW it may be worth noting comments made by Edwin Poots in answer to Stewart Dickson just a few days ago who we all know would not like to see the ML granted ......

"I am considering a number of documents relating to the proposed Islandmagee gas storage project. The documents relate to an application for a marine licence and the review of a discharge consent and abstraction licence. The matter that I am determining is complex, and, as such, it is vital that I give the documentation all due consideration."
Stewart Dickson

"Thank you, Minister. I trust that you will appreciate that this issue requires a great deal of detailed analysis and investigation. Nevertheless, it is effectively a sword of Damocles being held over many residents in Islandmagee and far beyond.
Given the approach of the COP26 environment conference in Scotland later this year, together with the number of serious incidents around the world regarding this type of gas storage, and given that this is a fossil fuel and the United Kingdom wishes to move us away from fossil fuel, will the Minister please help to alleviate the fears and concerns of my constituents in Islandmagee and across East Antrim? Can we have a positive decision that the Department is clear that fossil fuel is a fuel of the past?"
Edwin Poots
DUP
"Unfortunately, I cannot look at the issue in the same way as the Member for East Antrim or, indeed, his colleagues from East Antrim who are in my party might look at it. I have to look at it purely on the basis of the scientific and planning evidence that is provided to me. Whatever decision I arrive at will be based on the qualitative material that is garnered by them in order to make recommendations to me. Therefore, I cannot take a decision that would be prejudiced by bias either for or against. I have to take in all the arguments and arrive at a reasoned position that is defensible thereafter."
At least he confirms the decision will be based on scientific and planning evidence and not based on what will be the most popular decision for the nimby's who simply don't want this to proceed at any cost.
stokey12,
Care is needed with such articles; like most modern "journalism", that is clearly a puff-piece written by the company's own PR department and printed verbatim. The Saipem contract was not "new".
£1m in revenue from the Azura amounts to no more than a glorified oil-change and won't even touch the sides when considering the cost of keeping on the lights in Belfast.
Let's hope the recent noises are genuine thunder, rather than more JW wind.
Good find Stokey
Taken again from Cenkos
“ The P&O Azura vessel is due to enter the Belfast facility in the coming days for general repairs (we estimate £1m+ revenue)”
Not too bad at all !
Also found today’s Gov update on Gas supply

Just seen this article from the Belfast Telegraph https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/business/northern-ireland/harland-and-wolff-set-to-welcome-large-vessel-as-it-builds-on-success-since-2019-takeover-40861124.html Note what it says about the Azura.
Not a certainty but it fits with my thoughts all along. Before the last board of directors were voted out a plan will have been put in place in my opinion and the gas caverns will have been dependant on amongst other things a gas supply deal to the UK .The ship building aspect will have been planned with the monetising of the island magee gas project and the funding coming from that project .ie a majority stake taken by someone/group..All planned and probably government had a large say in it and hence why the large bonus,s to Mr wood et al.The sp has been walked down purposely and is still being tightly held .Killik buys a stake usually for other parties so it may well be that the other party is the large stakeholder ready to step into island magee..All will start to play out now in my opinion because the demand for gas is unstoppable at the moment and in the medium term .The large ship going to Appledore is also interesting but I accept it may well be unconnected to gas supply.JW was at no 10 to discuss amongst other things the gas supply and infas roll in my view.
LSE03,thanks for the link ,gas is running out in the north sea 30yrs supply from 1995 I think but demand has depleted it even more imho ,
Chitta, morning am glad someone can read into why its in dock I Belfast, and yes spot on there will be more

Gives a flavour of debate going on in this space
Teekay the owner of the Dorset spirit are the largest shipper of crude and LNG.Meetings between energy company's and the government this morning to address the energy crisis related to gas supply highlights the need for a supply and storage facility..Until those caverns are in play we will need a regasification vessel and it makes sense to convert a vessel in quick fashion to alleviate what is almost an emergency situation.I would not be surprised to see more than one of these regasification vessels positioned around are coasts ie Belfast Barrow .The MARINE LICENCE is a must now .
The need for decarbonising and hydrogen couldn't be any bigger, those salt caverns will be essential to the future of our country imho
On BBC two now excellent report Big push on shipping
