https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-4454330 Nicaragua dispatch was linked to a post of last chance I think that was mixed in a post containing a message from mc.I don't know if it was mc or lc link ? Do you think mc is a bit premature in calling the end for ortega? Anyhow I have been randomly checking many sites and individuals on fb.the story seems similar .yes there is ortega support too. Do we discount amnesty international and any other human rights organisations as cia collaborators too.I think there is little doubt that the original protests were attacked by the regime and it has escalated although telesur and rt and the gvnt still blame protestors. Obviously usa has a bad record in nica and central america in general and I have no doubt they have some input but I do not believe that they are pesuasive enough to convince that many people to face up to heavily armed police and paramilitaries without supplying them with real weapons.the danger is the arms will flow. I would agree that all news should be viewed with some caution .I think it is likely that ortega will aim to stay in power, many will suffer and he may well succeed.but it is fundamentally wrong to shoot protestors .
Sein Anything written by Tim Rogers under the Nicaragua Dispatch label should come with a health warning. i.e. 'probable CIA operative, read this article with caution'.
Well we havnt got as far as pc and I also cannot see that happening until the situation calms down .It doesnt appear to be calming down to me. It is a very sad situation.children burnt in their beds not a great backdrop for a pc imo.
According to nicaragua dispatch masaya is being attacked as we speak by police and paramilitaries.also the civic alliance has suspended talks.https://www.facebook.com/223382324371719/posts/1832109430165659/
If government officials turned up for a PC right now, they'd be facing a lynch mob. Whether the locals want a mine or not right now is irrelevant, the government is hated right now. Better off waiting for a PC when things have cooled of, possibly with a new government.
In difficult times some good news for the locals might be welcome. New jobs locally and much needed tax revenue nationally. PC might just be sooner than we think and MC could promote this at his coming meeting.
My concern regarding permits is whether or not the government wants to risk a public consultation at this pretty fragile time in negotiations etc.. could it inflame tensions further? Or instead, to quote a truly horrible phrase, would it be “ a good day to bury bad news?” Still watching and waiting. Hoping to get back in soon - 20% lower than when I sold, I should add.. ;-) Regards T123
Anyone visited that facebook site recently? Nicaragua dispatch ,interesting site. That link is from sat .there are more up to date ones on there now. I mistakenly thought all of your post was from mc whereas the inverted commas contained an article from nd.did he provide that link? Mc is very straight ."It is impossible to predict right now".completely honest.permits may be on hold till after elections if in fact they are agreed .or they may happen fairly soon.no telling. He is doing all you could expect of a ceo, heading off to a fairly dangerous place .hats off to him ,he has and is doing everything he can,it is a case of wait and see and hope that new elections happen.
thanks for sharing @LC + Nero everything will fall into place
I followed up with a question regarding whether we can realistically expect permits to be granted before the election, here is his response (quoted with permission): The Ministries are still working and have made an effort to appear that business is as usual. The State is the employer at the Ministries and state paid employees have been working throughout the crisis. I am en route to Managua and have written formal letter requesting meetings with the Ministers at MEM and MARENA along with several other key people. Assuming a deal is stuck for elections on 29th March 2019, business normalises etc, one imagines the Country wants a massive sign of confidence, e.g. Permitting Mina La India is a solution: $120M investment, 800 jobs, $134M in taxes over 11 years. BUT is it is impossible to predict right now. I am told that mining is a top priority eg La India mine could add 0.5% to GDP and $10M in taxes a year. Logically, whoever is in power should want permits as whoever is in power faces a funding crisis and needs the employment, tax revenues. In many ways, one expects a very pro-business Government. I am doing my best to progress permits. Mark
I am on my way to Nicaragua. Presidential and General elections called for 29th March 2019 guaranteed by Organisation of American States (OAS). Not confirmed. UN and EU arrived in Nicaraguan at the weekend. Ortega is negotiating his exit. Potential excellent news as it paves a way forward. End of national strike, barricades agreed by all parties etc. https://www.facebook.com/223382324371719/posts/1828240003885935/ "After an 8 hour lunch, Nicaragua's National Dialogue reconvened Friday night with several important announcements. Sometime between the second course and dessert, all sides apparently agreed to a 6-point accord that commits the government to invite the OAS' Inter-American Commission on Human Rights back to Nicaragua; to accelerate the formation of an international and independent expert Truth Commission; to invite the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights to Nicaragua; to invite the Secretary General of the OAS to Nicaragua; to call for an end to all forms of violence from all sides; and to implement a plan as soon as possible with oversight from the Commission on Truth and Security to dismantle all the barricades in the country. Issues up for discussion in tomorrow's National Dialogue: Democratization of Nicaragua, including a proposal to hold early general elections on March 29, 2019 to elect a new congress and president. Ortega would not be allowed to run for reelection. The current CSE would be disbanded this month, so new electoral authorities would be charged with overseeing the poll. Repeat: this is only a proposal at the moment — it will be discussed tomorrow at National Dialogue. Stay tuned. Good night-"
