Cigarette makers British American Tobacco and Imperial Brands faded after the US Food and Drug Administration named National Cancer Institute director Ned Sharpless as acting commissioner to replace Scott Gottlieb, who announced plans to step down earlier this month.

“This reinforces our view that investors were premature to assume that Gottlieb’s departure would lead to a lighter regulatory hand over the tobacco industry out of Washington. It now appears the FDA will not skip a beat in its pursuit of tobacco regulations, and we continue to believe Congress will seek to become more involved in addressing the youth ecigarette epidemic during the months to come.”

Took a couple of k position here on Friday. For once it's going in the right direction for me (usually as soon as I buy a share it goes south).

Yes I understand that too. I was trying to find if you can sell AFTER the EX_DIVI DAY and still get the divi... It's ok found all the info I need on the BATS Website. Below if anyone else wants to learn too.

On the day it is ex-dividend, you cannot buy it and get the dividend.

Yes I understand that. I'm just trying to find out, if it goes ex-divi on May 2nd, can I sell them May 3rd or do I have to wait for another date... All I want is to get the Divi. Happy to hold as have no intention to sell but would just like to learn for future reference. Thanks.

I am not bothered to the day, always give a day or two leeway when buying and selling.
At the top of this page is an icon ‘financial diary’ clicking on that may help,
BATS pay a quarterly dividend.

Thanks Sidmadrid. How do you find out the Record date? I take it you cannot sell the shares before that record date if you want to receive the dividend?

Dividends
5 Mar '19
Hi Newbie here, can anyone tell me how dividends work? Do you have to own the shares for a certain amount of time to be eligible for the dividend payout? Also the day they go ex-div, can you sell them the next day and still get the divi or do you need to be holding them until payment date?

BATS SP went down today
28 Feb '19
Today BAT published preliminary accounts, which shows turnover up, profit up, dividend up, but SP down. This pattern seems to be normal trend lately.

yes, tricky one, 11% up on BATS this week now. Sentiment seems to be behind the company as oversold. I am currently picking which i feel are suppressed sp's. I am looking at a cut off point of 5% down, depending on the book and how long it takes to fall 5%. Working two pots of £10,000 should cover failure. Ultimately though if a 100 or 250 look suppressed and the fundamentals and divi are fair it should in theory bounce regardless, subject to time. I am in no rush to withdraw funds if the business is decent

works as a strategy until it doesn't. If it never gets 10% then are you under your strategy locked in forever? When do you exit?

what was the cut off date mandrill. I have been messing around on aim for a bit and it is a mess so my technique is now as follows: Invest £20k, £10k in 2 stocks like bats/ dom etc, let it rise by 10% and leave the £1000 in for ever more on the divi? what you reckon, good strategy?

Betting it will rise to payment date (7th Feb) when many will reinvest automatically. It will then retreat. Thus, we are worse off.
