LONDON (Thomson Financial) - The UK medicines regulator the MHRA has announced that it has granted Israeli generics giant Teva approval for a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline's sumatriptan-based migraine drug Imigran.
The approval has been granted under the European Mutual Recognition Procedure, where European member states agree to accept a drug approval application because other member states have already approved it.
However, it is not the first generic version of Imigran that has been approved in the UK -- Dexcel Pharma also received a marketing authorisation for its Sumatriptan Tablets in May 2006.
The new Teva products, Sumatriptan 50mg and 100mg Tablets, have been given a license to be sold as prescription only.
In 2006, Glaxo reported worldwide sales for sumatriptan-based Imigran and Imitrex, one of its top ten pharmaceutical products, of 711 mln stg, up 3 pct on the year before.
