DUBAI, June 5 (Reuters) - Russia's top e
nergy official said on Saturday he expects Russia to have stricter rules for offshore oil and gas drilling after BP's oil spill.

'From our side, we will have stricter requirements for ecological safety,' Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin told reporters on a visit to the United Arab Emirates.

'We express the hope that BP will cope with the crisis,' he said after Russia's Rosneft signed on Saturday a gas concession with Crescent Petroleum in the emirate of Sharjah.

'We are sure that they (BP) are making their best efforts to survive.

BP executives say they hope to be siphoning off the bulk of newly spilled oil from the deep-sea gusher within days.

BP began capturing some of the oil spewing from its ruptured Gulf of Mexico well on Friday as President Barack Obama warned the company against skimping on compensation to residents and businesses.

The spill is causing an ecological and economic disaster for the U.S. Gulf Coast.

In 2006, BP took a $1bn stake in the Russian state-oil company Rosneft.

BP's Russian venture TNK-BP said in March it aims to sell the Kovykta, a giant Siberian gas field, to Russian state firm Rosneftegaz, a shareholder both in Gazprom and Rosneft
