Germany, Argentina And Mexico Leaders To Hold Talks On Trade, Climate

Thu, 8th Jun 2017 13:23

BUENOS AIRES (Alliance News) - Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Buenos Aires on Thursday at the start of a three-day visit to Argentina and Mexico for talks which are set to focus on global trade, climate protection and migration.

Merkel's trip to Latin America comes as she attempts to build an international alliance aimed at countering US President Donald Trump's climate policy and anti-free trade stance in the run-up to next month's Group of 20 summit of major economies in Hamburg. The chancellor is to chair the summit.

She is expected to hold a joint press conference later Thursday with Argentine President Mauricio Macri.

Berlin officials believe that the governments in both Argentina and Mexico are closer to Germany than the US on trade and climate following Trump's "America First" policy, which calls for a more protectionist stance and resulted in Washington ditching the Paris accord on climate change.

Merkel then travels to Mexico City for talks with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

While Trump has vowed to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, which includes the US, Canada and Mexico, the EU hopes to sign off on a new trade deal with Latin America by the end of the year.
