Kuwait Questions Suspects Over Deadly Mosque Attack

Sat, 27th Jun 2015 09:04

CAIRO (Alliance News) - Kuwaiti authorities said on Saturday they were investigating an unspecified number of arrested suspects in a suicide attack on a Shiite mosque that left 27 dead the day before.

The Kuwaiti Interior Ministry called on residents of the Gulf emirate to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of those involved in the attack claimed by the Islamic State extremist militia.

"Security agencies will track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice as soon as possible," the ministry said in a statement carried by state news agency Kuna.

Police launched a massive hunt in several parts of Kuwait, home to a large community of migrant workers, the Dubai-based Al Arabiya television reported.

At least 18 suspects were arrested, according to the broadcaster.

Kuwait declared Saturday a national day of mourning.

A suicide bomber attacked the al-Imam Sadiq mosque in the capital Kuwait City during the congregational Friday prayers.

Kuwait, which has a Shiite minority of about 30% of the country's population, has enjoyed relative security and stability, despite regional turmoil.

The Islamic State, which is active in Syria and Iraq, has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in recent months on Shiite mosques in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

The radical Sunni group regards Shiites as heretics.
