Chinese Foreign Minister Wang In Berlin To Meet German Counterpart

Thu, 31st May 2018 07:39

BERLIN (Alliance News) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was expected in Berlin on Thursday to meet his German counterpart Heiko Maas ahead of a high-level summit in Brussels.

The German Foreign Ministry said the meeting would take place in Berlin's Villa Borsig and would focus on "bilateral and international issues".

Wang is scheduled to meet European Commission President Juncker and foreign policy chief Mogherini in Brussels on Friday for "the eighth round of the China-EU high-level strategic dialogue," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said earlier in the week in Beijing.

He was then expected to fly on to South Africa to attend a meeting of the foreign ministers from the five major emerging nations - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - commonly known as BRICS.

Chancellor Angela Merkel spent two days in China last week where she and a business delegation were optimistic about future cooperation between the two sides.

Better data protection was key to working with China on new technologies, Merkel said on Friday as she ended the trip.

She said she hoped to sign a memorandum of understanding with China in the coming months about self-driving vehicles, which would include better security measures.

Diplomatic tensions over Iran and North Korea dominated the Beijing leg of Merkel's trip, where she also met the wife of an imprisoned Chinese human rights lawyer.
